Seiko SPB121J1 2020 Green Alpinist

my new alpinist has just arrived and initial impressions are wholly positive

the dial colour is gorgeous against the gold tone numerals, the cathedral hand set is so well suited to the dial

the compass bezel movement seems to take a deliberate twist to move the internal bezel

the Prospex logo does not bother me

the date window with cyclops aids legibility and the cyclops itself is not obtrusive on the sapphire front crystal

the display back is well executed and the movement itself - 6R35 with 70 hour power reserve - looks impressive - SEIKO and the prospex logo are printed on the glass back

both crowns are unsigned

the case finishing is beautiful with excellent high polish on the case sides especially

it does not seem to wear "tall" at all

I know the leather strap was criticised on the SARB017 for being of poor quality - whilst the strap is still brown leather with alligator pattern as before, this strap seems to be of very good quality whilst still needing a little wearing in like all straps. the leather is not shiny and seems to have no plasticky coating. the deployant clasp works very nicely and is a much better alternative to the pin buckle clasp

all in all very pleased with this pick up

some early phone pictures to conclude

think a strapcode bracelet is on the horizon but the leather strap is really nice on this one

it looks lovely but was a bit concerned about the pins to re size as I don't have the tools but can do the screws on my strapcode jubilee that I have fitted to my save the ocean turtle easily enough

I thought this polished oyster would look nice on a alpinist

I don't know what the sarb017 strap was like but it seems from all reviews and reports that it was poor

I days wear and this one seems really nice softening in nicely already and it has a really high quality feel to the leather and the deployant clasp works nicely and has a quality feel. it can only extend the life of the strap as well

day 1 of use has the movement at 5 seconds fast so that is promising so far

on the wrist for 3 days now

movement seems to have settled in to 1 second fast per day

the leather strap and clasp have broken in nicely and have a real quality feel and is very comfortable to wear

keeper!

I’ve had very good results with the 6R35 that is fitted inside my updated Prospex “sumo” Ref SBDC083, both in terms of time keeping and power reserve. Pretty impressive.

I’m a big fan of the 6R15 actually, I’ve had great results with several models.... the 6R35 is a real upgrade.

Looks great! How are you getting along with the rotating inner bezel (the compass bezel)? I understand that the inner bezel does not utilize a screw down crown--have you noticed that it inadvertently rotates on you throughout the day?

correct the compass crown does not screw down and moves maybe a couple of mm shift in a days wear - not really a deal breaker for me tbh

Super pumped. Just snagged mine from Hodinkee. White dial black strap. Will post photos in two days!

All four references are currently available to purchase on Hodinkee - even the cream dial with gold indices which was previously thought to be a limited release exclusive to the Japan market.

thought there would be more owners posting by now but still not too many places in the UK with actual stock and my 15% off still seems decent ish

I am loving mine - settled at 5 seconds per day fast so pretty decent - strap broken in nicely

congrats on the pick up and looking forward to your photos

Thanks !

Glad to hear you’re still enjoying it. I wouldn’t be surprised if pictures start to come in from a bunch of folks - just hit the market in the US.

Do you plan to keep it on the original strap?

after reading all the negative stuff about the sarb 017 strap I suspect I would be putting it on a strapcode oyster bracelet immediately and had chosen my option but the strap and deployant clasp I just don't see the need - in my view the strap is attractive and more than good enough to use long term
