New for Me 1603

My first leap into a vintage Rolex after collecting the modern references over the years. I always felt there was something missing in my collection. The vintage Datejusts I think just ooze coolness. After searching I picked up a 1968 DJ 1603. It needed a full service so I took it to my trusted Rolex parts watchmaker who kept it all original except for the new correct crystal. I bought it from a pawnshop and so it came on a NATO. I sourced a later model American made Rolex jubilee that fits just fine. I bought some leather straps too but think I like it best on the bracelet. A bit unique I’m told since the pie pan dial lacks lume plots and so do the hands. I really enjoy catching the light off that sweet patina dial.

And of course I relied upon the many threads on TRF archives to educate and inform me about this era of DJs. Doing the research was so much fun. Thanks TRF

Nice no-lume dial, and a great pawn shop pick-up.

great looking datejust you have and i'm surprised the American made bracelet's head links fit so nice and tight to the watch case as they are usually fairly sloppy fitting without the locating tubes for the spring bars.

It's cousin says hello. Not my picture or wrist, but my watch and a recent buy. Also married to a bracelet not original to the watch.

Nick, you're right. We need a 1603 fashion show to welcome our new brethren. :) Post 'em if you got 'em!

Richard,
Great pieces. When I researched on TRF to educate myself prior to my purchase, you had posted some invaluable information about vintage DJs which helped me feel confidant in my search and eventual choice. It wasn’t too pretty when I saw it at first but the original dial drew me in and the lightly polished case. My watchmaker knew exactly what I wanted in my service since he is a Rolex vintage collector too. Thank you sir

Not sure if a 1601 counts?

LOL! I didn't mean to start this, but glad I did.

I am not sure what it is about these 1960s/70s Rolex dials that makes them so durable and resistant to patina. I have 1601s and 15XXs as well. The dials are all in amazing condition. I'd say the watches themselves were treated reasonably well, but definitely not safe queens.

Whatever it was, they nailed it on durability.

As i understand it, silver dials in particular are not painted. they have silver plated onto them, the black print is applied, and then a thin clear lacquer is used to prevent the silver from oxidizing over time (oxidized silver turns a blackish-grey).

Most dials that bubble, etc. are actually painted dials and they age a little differently.
