It's not odd. Just different. Many countries and cultures eat different animals, as we are learning via latest news cycles.

It's all about perception. We don't really eat bugs either and other cultures do.

If we all saw how our meat/chicken was killed and processed we may not eat meat at all.

We just turn off the fact that for us to live, every day something else has to die.

What about your Mounties? If you took away all of your horses, the RCMP would have to become the Canadian Royal Automotive Police, and CRAP doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

It’s sold as jerky in many states and it falls into conveyors at slaughter houses. The FDA allows for some creative math and you can order it online within the USA.

It’s not for everyone, but it’s certainly legal.

You’ve eaten it too.

Probably not. I don't eat jerky and we don't eat meat when we travel outside the US. We buy our red meat exclusively from a highly reputable local beef farm. We rarely eat meat that we don't prepare, except for high end steak houses and if they disguise horse as beef then we all have bigger problems.

Yes and donkey, it’s a tasty dish.

Every culture regards different animals as fair game.

We should all be more interested in the welfare conditions than specific species in my view.

They drive Tahoe’s and Taurus’s now.

But the official maker of the Mounties boots will do them in elephant or pretty much anything if you like.

Agreed.

I gave up on chicken a while ago. Won't touch it.

Not surprised. Cars are more efficient. Horses poop* about 8 times a day and leave a mess on the road.

*Apologies for the graphic language.

That’s another story.

Chicken farms are disgusting. My grand uncle (? That’s a thing right) was a butcher and he said bear and chicken were the worst meats to eat. Chicken was dirty (and they’ll eat their dead) and bear was oily and fatty. He’d carve up bear for hunters but toss the meat.

Yes, in Italy. In the region my wife was born they call it cavallo. It was more common when she was young. It wasn't bad.

Oh yeah. We have a second home in Delaware near the beach which means we drive by chicken farms and processing plants in the Delmarva area all the time, this got me curious. I conducted some surface level research on chicken and was so disgusted I cut it off forever. Even the definition of organic and grass fed can be quite misleading, not good enough for me. If people only knew.

I've had raw horse as an appetizer in Japan. Not something I'd order again.

You mean my $50 filet mignon at Ruth's Chris was previously a bucking bronco?
What's next? Barbecue Wookiee?

Horse meat? No.

Maybe some nice baby seal .... "the veal of the ocean".

You’ve eaten it too.

Well it’s been in many places in addition to that. And it is illegal if not declared.

For example, the 2013 scandal affected anyone who ate:

Burger King in UK & Ireland

Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini, in Italy and Spain

Birds Eye chili con carne sold Belgium

Many schools, old-age homes, prisons and branches of the armed forces in UK (if Sodexo was the meat supplier)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_horse_meat_scandal

I would guess it’s in more places now than before.

It’s not bad. I’ve had it before. I didn’t think it was that odd or uncommon to have eaten it. I have spent a lot of time outside of the US though which might make a difference.

Horse meat is good, I've eaten it many times, in Sweden it's known as "Hamburgerkött" and is sold like sliced ham for sandwiches.
