Filing down springbars?

I recently got a 1680 submariner in pretty decent condition but the case has been slightly over-polished and/or refinished too many times. The lugs look decent but are thin enough where the springbar sticks out ever-so-slightly from the lug holes. This bothers me.

I am considering filing and polishing the end of the springbar by about 1mm so that it fits better with the finish. My main concern is that the entire inside of the springbar is hollow and i will destroy it by doing this (i.e. the spring will just pop out the side if I file it down too much. Does any know about this or have experience with it? I am assuming the end of the bar isn't entirely hollow but I am just not sure.

I think 1mm should be fine, if you mess them up they're cheap to replace.

I'd tape up the spring section(s) before you get going to prevent any shavings gumming up the works.

PM me. I have factory spring bars that will work for you. (20mm, but with smaller arms).

Dont worry. Thare is enough "meat" on the end of a spring bar to take off a mm or so.

I believe the retractable end pieces of a springbar are solid, I have a few laying around and they don't look hollow.

I did it and it worked well. I sanded them down with high grit sandpaper, then higher grit paper then I used Jewelers rouge and dremel to polish the ends. I did not end up taping them to prevent "gumming up the works" because it was too small to tape and I don't really think this was necessary. I would post pics but this wasn't that spectacular of an endeavor. Thanks to everyone for the help.

That's nice, but you know, they do make a couple of different spring-bars with short and long pivots just for that issue..

this is good to know, had i gotten this advice a few days earlier, I would have gone this route. Regardless, the deed is done now and it'll work for now. Thank you
