Long time reader, first time poster...Incoming!!!
Well, like many of you, after literally several dozen hours of nearly non stop reading bordering on the obsessive compulsive, my chase has ended. I've purchased my first Rolex. A 16610 Sub Date that is "approximately nine or ten years old" according to the seller. I'll know the serial and post pics once I have it in hand. I've taken the opportunity to combine to the good old intro thread with the classic incoming thread :-)
My first "nice watch" was a Movado Portico. I know, what was I thinking? Hey, I was 19. It looked cool. My first quality timepiece was an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 2504.50. Man, I loved that watch. Beat it up a bit too much as a daily driver and ended up trading it in on a nice AT 8500 midsize teak grey which is on my wrist as I type this. I love the 8500 even more. I also had a Breitling Chrono Cockpit. Watch size fit my wrist very well, but the dial size of my AT ended up making my Breitling look funny. There just isn't enough dial real estate on the Chrono Cockpit, as much as I loved the look overall. The dial to case ratio just bothered me. Anyway, I ended up flipping the Breitling to put towards my first Sub. It should arrive Saturday...I can't wait. Well, thanks for those of you who've made it through my rambling. And now what you came for: |

Great score.
The progression of your collection mirrors that of nearly everyone here. You buy one nice watch (usually quartz) and start to appreciate a well-made timepiece. Next you buy something that it a notch above and usually automatic. Then you start lusting for the next level up and researching the history of the brands. You are toast at that point. I must say, your choice for your first Rolex shows one heck of a lot of well-reasoned research and thought. We hope to see much more of you on this forum.

Thanks to everyone for the positive responses. I can't wait for the Sub Date :-) I made sure to get overnight shipping to I do not lose my sanity.
Well, I purchased the Breitling at Tourneau while on vacation in Orlando. Flipped it within 15 months of purchase. It was a mid-size model which is not in high demand on the preowned market, and it was on a strap. Needless to say I did not recoup all of my money, let alone turn a profit. I did well on the initial purchase. Bought from a Tourneau outlet for 33% off retail. After tax it was about $2,700 on $4,000 retail. I financed it, because for me that's the only option that makes sense when buying retail. If I'm going to shell out the full purchase price I might as well go preowned. Anyway, I listed it for $2,500 on Craigslist. Wanted to flip quickly so I accepted $1,900 four days after the listing. I thought it would take longer to sell on CL because it was a mid-size model, and I'm quite sure I wouldn't have done as well on the forums. All in all I lost $800, or about 30%. Not bad at all in my opinion for flipping a watch bought new from Tourneau. A small price to pay for the enjoyment I got out of the watch. I can tell you for sure this will be the last time I take a loss on a watch. There are only two kind of people in this hobby. This who lose money, and those who turn a small profit. I refuse to be the former. |

Great Sub. I did similar before I purchased my Exp II in 2009, I personally think you would be hard pressed finding another online resource out side of this forum to educate yourself before taking the plunge into your first Rolex.
Best of health, and welcome aboard. |
