YOU WON'T BELIVE YOUR EYES......$200 Treasure

This dial was purchased for $200 as a refinished piece. The owner purchased it to complete his 5510. He contacted me to discuss what options he might have to better refinish the dial and after looking closer at the dial, we noticed that it appeared to have a few of the original minute markers in select areas showing. After seeing that, I thought there may be a possibility that I could carefully remove the top layer to expose the original finish. Sure enough, after hours of a steady hand and an headache, the treasure was exposed.

What is your next step? Are you going to have the dial relumed with radium? or keep it like this?

I believe he will have it relumed with Radium and perhaps have a clear coat added...that one has the ? mark.

I’ve seen this once before, I think it was a dial Jed had if I remember correctly. I wonder how common it was to refinish over an existing dial?

Awesome find and great job with the restoration!

I believe Phillip answered that above:

Did you mean ! exclamation point dial, Philip?

What a great job you did. That must have taken hours. I tried on an old Omega of my Dad’s - just to remove the mildewed varnish - what tedious work that was.

In the dial itself, would that possibly be a 5508 without printed depth rating? I believed the 5510’s had the depth printed on them.

Forgive my ignorance.

The dial is practically free from the elements. How do these dials get so worn?

Nice rescue. Whoever refinished it like that in the first place needs to be shot.
