5230 World Time

I have always loved the look of Patek world time watches. I think they are so classy and have such a unique look compared to the other references in the catalog, especially because of the dial. I tried on the newer 5230R version which has a really proportionate case size dimensions and the movement is absolutely gorgeous!

Any thoughts as to why these sit in the cases and don't seem to have the same demand? I understand the limitations of the world time complication not being able to do half time zones or daylight savings. But it just seems strange to me that these trade at a "relative" discount and it is quite tempting to pick one up. Thoughts welcomed!

Patek WT watches are definitely under-appreciated watches. I own several WTs and they are beautiful watches. Saying they don't account for daylight savings time is just an excuse. If you really want to know the time, our phones give more accurate time than most watches. Watches are more collectible items and are unlike technology that gets outdated every few years that we discard to get the latest tech items.

As you know the thin 240 movement with the micro-rotor does not have a seconds watch in this watch. But if you really wanted to know the time to the exact second, once again better way to check the time.

If you like the 5230R, I say go for it

I think most people preferred simple not clutter dial.

World time dial looks too busy to me.

I would love to add a Patek world time to my collection, but that would likely be when I can accumulate several other Patek's to my collection. It's nice to have watch but mainly in a deeper collection.

The 5230G was my first Patek. I love it. My only issue with it is it doesn’t have a date function, but totally understand why. It’s an awesome watch. Buy it and enjoy.

No date and small case size is the problem for me.

I like Patek WT watches as pieces of art rather than for being particularly useful. However, the grey center ruins 5230R for me. I prefer the 5110 series over the 5230s but their 5231J sibling is a different story altogether.

I really like the enamelling in the 5231J. Perfect watch that.

Lovely watches. I have been eyeing a older version WT without the big bulbous hands!

Would recommend taking a look at the VC Worldtimers which show more zones though they end up being a little bit more busier.

IMO I like the 5110 more due to hands. It’s a nice pickup at used. I personally would do this than buy 5230 at retail.

Just got mine!
A PP -WT is a must have. One of the complications PP does better.
I find the 5230 well balanced and intriguing. Movement Finishing on par with competitors, overall good value for money l, imho

I've always been a big fan of the 5930G, I think the WT, just like most of Patek's dress watches are out of favor due to the sports steel bracelet demand. Perhaps when more of us are back in suits the demand for dress watches will also pickup.

Buy for the emotion not the functionality. Modern PP world timers always seem compromised functionally. So many other manufacturers have been able to account for daylight savings time. PP can't be bothered. And why, if the watches sell anyway?

Not really true, they are all extremely compromised

There are some that account for daylight savings time. The JLC Geophysic, for example.

Yes but daylight saving isn't consistent around the world so even if everything is 100% correct on the dial (which it can only be for the cities shown on the dial and assuming they haven't changed DLS which happens quite frequently) it is still inaccurate twice a year when some places have implemented daylight saving and others have yet to do so. I love the WorldTime complication but at best it is only a rough guide no matter who makes it.

Sure, but I will take a couple weeks inaccuracy twice a year over inaccuracy over 1/2 the year. In a rotation of watches, not a big deal. But a world time that is askew for 1/2 the year or more?

I take your point, though, nothing mechanical will be perfect in this regard...so buy for emotion rather than technical accuracy.

Cheers

Mine has been no discounts for a while now... frankly a lack of inventory in general and its a "boutique."

Discount varies depending on the market. Many large metro area ADs will say no discount. You can always start calling around and ask for availability outside your immediate area.
