Pls help a newbie

Hi everyone...

So sadly, my dad just recently passed away, and yesterday was the 'clean out his things day'...rough time, but some beautiful memories, and apparently some hidden treasures.

Found his (or more likely, my grampa's) Rolex(!) in a pile of broken jewelry. Other watches too (all broken), but I know this is a Rolex thread.

Anyway, it's in really bad shape, but I really want to fix it up and wear it...but I am afraid I won't be able to afford the repair. Have any of you done a repair on something this messed up, and is it going to break me?

Hi and welcome to the forums. Condolences for your loss.

It's a charming piece but has seen better days. Because of the age of your piece it will likely not be serviced by the regular Rolex Service Centre but can be serviced/restored in their heritage department. However it willl probably not make much financial sense, but if sentiment prevails then it is something to look into. You could request a quote and decide from there.

Alternatively contact your trustworthy local watchmaker for recommendations. Also worth noting that for vintage pieces it's commonly preferred to keep the condition as original as possible especially if it affects the appearance of the watch so be mindful of what you want fixed or replaced which will also affect the servicing cost.

I was afraid of that...I don't need (or want) it to be cleaned up too much (I like that it looks like it did when my grampa wore it). :)
I'd just be happy if they could get it to run.

Do you happen to know of any reputable repair people in the NYC area?

Sorry for your loss, and I can understand your desire to get the watch up and running as a momento to your dad.

Luckily, you can get it serviced by any number of independent watchmakers that a lot of us use. Shouldn't be too unreasonable.

Try Rik at timecareinc.com, or L.A. Watchworks (someone please correct me if that latter name is incorrect). They will provide a sympathetic service keeping the watch original. Good luck.
