I'll throw another option out to consider. What do you think about the Explorer I? I have a 214270 that is my favorite Rolex watch in my current collection. It's so under the radar that it goes with everything and never gets noticed. You could start with a 214270 as the pass-me-down timepiece, but then add a 116610LV (Hulk) down the road to satisfy your love of green and desire for a Sub. I think this route is worth considering if you want to go unnoticed today and still have a fun watch in the future.

Good luck!

I think the Explorer is worth another look. I tried it on before with high expectations, but felt it was too small for my taste. I'm 6'3" and have a 7.5" wrist. I know bigger guys wear it, but it felt small to me. But it is beautiful.

I'm a few inches shorter than you but have 7.25" wrists and I found the Explorer perfect for my wrists. To each his own, of course. I found that the 214270 -- without a timing bezel -- was essentially all dial. It wears large for a 39mm. Since getting the Explorer, I've downsized my collection, eliminated my 44mm Omegas and added a Sub and GMT II both at 40mm. I like that these watches have wrist presence but still fit under a shirt and maintain a low profile. All the choices before you are good ones; the tough part is choosing. :-)

Lol no kidding! Like many have said, there is no WRONG choice. To say I'm taking my time and over analyzing the choice is putting it mildly!

Both designs have stood the test of time for over 50 years. So both are truly classic. It comes down to individual choice in a win win situation. I personally love the GMT for its second time zone and comfort on the wrist.

You can't go wrong with either. If you're dressing up more I actually prefer the GMT because of the PCL's. Trust me it doesn't stand out any more than the Sub. But try both on and see what sings.

Just clicked for the sub! 43 to 42!

The PCLs are a little flashy.

If you don't want flash, I suggest the sub. I have the gmt LN and the pcl's make it stand out a bit more as does the busier bezel. Indeed the ceramic bezels in general do. If you want a less showy watch, I could suggest a 16610ln which I suspect would be perfect given your requirements and very classy too.....

since you will wear it all the time, i will vote the GMT
personally because i like date function on my watch, i know now we can just check our phone to know what date is it faster, but it's a lot faster to peek in your watch
if you dont like the scratches, you can switch it to non PCL i think, i dont know about the possible size differences but once i saw a non PCL bracelet on a GMT and it is genuine rolex hahaha

Option 3 is Sub Date for the timeless classic + date function

did you consider the Datejust 41mm in steel with silver dial and without a fluted bezel , smart ideal for the office and does not look to flush also a great watch to start off with

Yes I did try on the DJ II and DJ41. Not for me (yet). I have a sport watch mentality.

Between those two, the GMT.

Now, if it had been a sub date...

Yes, I'm getting a lot of calls to go for sub date... May have to reconsider.

I bought my first Rolex a month ago. I chose assuming the possibility that it would be the only one I ever own and got the SubC Date. I knew I wanted a Sub, but went back and forth on the date or no-date choice. In the end I decided I preferred the overall look of the Date model. On the bright side, there isn't a wrong choice in your list.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I am... I am surprised how close the vote is! As I have said to other people, my brain tells me to get the GMT. It's super functional with the GMT hand, the date, and I like the slight splash of green.

However, my heart tells me to get the Sub. So clean. So classic. So versatile.

This is hard.

I have a SubC date and I still think I could have been happy with the GMT.

Regarding date vs. non-date, while the Explorer, OP, Air King, and Milgauss all with smooth bezels look fine without the date, I feel like the Sub bezel needs a date--possibly just because that's what I'm used to seeing.

Between GMT and Sub no-date, I vote GMT. But, I would consider Sub date and then try on GMT/Sub-date back to back a dozen times and see what sings to you. Both are awesome references!

I say GMT since Green is your favorite color and it's a little less common.

Reading your story, I think the Sub is the one for you.
Personally I would also choose the Sub. I'm not the biggest cyclops and PCL fan. Just thinkt the dial looks cleaner without the cyclops and I just like the look of brushed straps.

Both are great choices. I prefer Subs so I will almost always say get the Sub.

If your question is which watch to pick, I would suggest getting the 114060. It's so pure and simple with its symmetry and that's what makes it work with any occasion.

Sub date. In my life, the time zones wouldn't help, I have to set my watches half the time I put them on, anyway (no winder). But, the polished center links on my DJii don't bother me at all, just be mindful of your wrist placement. Not a problem for me, still in love with the watch and am mindful of it regardless-if you choose the GMT.

Thank you all so much for your input, advice, and various perspectives. I pulled the trigger today and will make a new post tomorrow to announce the winner. I'm excited, anxious, nervous, and a little sick about finally having made a decision.

Has this been more about the hunt than the kill all along? I think/hope not. However, it has been an amazing journey of research reading articles, watching videos, and endless discussions with other Rolex fans.

And the best news of all, my wife is happy and excited for me! Probably so I will just shut the hell up about it! Lol

Thanks guys. I'll post an update tomorrow when it arrives.
