Best watch to buy for a nervous new buyer

Hello all,

I want to purchase my first Rolex as a 30th birthday present to myself.

I know I want a sports watch and I have shortlisted three at the moment. I am open to change if you have better ideas. I want something nice that I love aswell as something that potentially could become a good future investment. I appreciate this is hard to tell but perhaps with your expertise you could point me in the right direction.

I would buy all watches as used from a reputable seller in the UK.

Choices are:

- Rolex Submariner Non Date Black Bezel ( 2014 ) £4900 mint
- Rolex GMT 2 black bezel (approx 2013) - £4900 mint
- Rolex GMT 2 Batman - (2015) unworn - £6450

I would reluctantly by the Batman at that price but I do love the colour scheme.

Any help as to what would be a sound purchase would be really appreciated.

I know it depends on taste and money but please assume I can afford all and like all. I want to know what could be the safest bet.

Thanks for any help you can give!

The safe bet is the one you like the most. Watches are not an investment.

at those prices I would be spending an extra few hundred pounds and going new

in terms of value all those mentioned will hold value well, the price difference would be a few hundred quid at most so i would prefer having the watch i liked best over a small increase in resale value

It is a watch, buy what you like, want to own and wear.

Simple as that.

I thought that may be the case. Problem is I like all so wondered if anything was a little more "limited" or interesting in the market space which could prove to be potentially better in the long run.

Thanks for the responses though guys.

Ive been told you cant get the Batman new anymore..... In the UK new they are £5900 I think but now 2nd hand is £6450

If you could afford all of them, you wouldn't be concerned about resale pricing. Just buy the one you like.

All are excellent! SubC would be my choice from your options....SubC (date) would be my 1st choice. I wouldn't look at any watch as an investment.

Thanks Rich

I heard the non date was proving to be more in demand then a date. Is that true?

The MSRP for BLNR in UK is £5950, which is £500 lower than you mention above. Is the price raised or the value appreciated?

Again I think the entire forum can not stress this enough. DO NOT BUY A WATCH BASED ON DEMAND. Buy the one that speaks to YOU. If you buy a watch based on how 'in demand' it is, you're going to be disappointed. Like others have stated

A watch is not an investment

Buy the one you like, don't buy one based on how you think others will perceive it

Other than when you want to resell the watch, literally no one besides you will ever notice your Rolex, unless it's another watch guy.

Hard to tell someone what they would like. Only you know your tast and your financial situation as far as the "Batman" goes. Also, those prices sound kinda high for used watches, go new!

Buy all three! XD

Go with what you like best. You will eventually end up with more Rolexes later down the road.

Unworn (£6450) vs new (£5950). That's the markup from grey dealers.

ok, don't listen to all the chatter about it not being an "investment"

you are spending a lot of money, and you want to know that you are not throwing it down a hole.

as much as everyone here will say "buy what you like", if the watches lost 75% of their value upon purchase, many would not be making that purchase.

would some? of course...but many would not.

that all said, the 114060 will IMHO likely be the most in demand for the longest amount of time.

you will not make money on it, or any of them, but it is unlikely you will loose a lot either.

I too bought a Sub C for my 30th birthday

A brand spanking new Sub C 114060 from a Rolex AD will cost you £5000. Why on earth would you buy a second hand one for a £100 saving?

As others have already said the RRP for a brand new GMT 2 BLNR from an AD is only £5950 so significantly cheaper than the second hand one you're looking at. Whatever "Reputable" dealer you are currently looking at are overpriced. Buy new !

You get the added benefit of peace of mind, your name on the warranty card plus the enjoyable experience of buying a brand new Rolex.

Of the 3 you've picked there is no wrong choice. IMO the Sub is the icon piece. It also depends on your lifestyle, brushed links or PCL's.

My advice is to go to your local Rolex AD and try them all on.

Looking forward to your incoming!

No it hasn't - check the Rolex UK website.

The prices you have quoted are very very high!

I would go 116710. A great watch and you save quite a bit over the BLNR.

BLNR is what I'd choose, please don't call it "batman".

You would need worldwide sales and stock level data to verify if that is true.

16710 is hot right now. Plus you can get the Pepsi/Coke inserts.

If we knew what would appreciate more than others, we'd all be buying that!

No bad choice there. Just buy what you love and wear the hell out of it.

Well said, Kyle.

I love my Submariner non-date. Not because of its perceived value or what other people think, but because in my eyes it is a beautiful watch that speaks to me in so many different ways. Buy a watch you like and never get rid of it.

Have a look at prices on the Rolex website.

A casual glance just now at the no date sub shows that the retail price is £5k so for £100 more than your costing in the first post you could have brand new from an ad!

Id say the 114060 and 116710ln are safer money long term. But the difference is negligible. They are all in demand SS rolex. You're good to go. Just pick which you like best because you'll soon find the easiest way to lose you're "investment" is flipping your watch for another.

So you would decide whether or not to get a date on your watch based on what other people are demanding, rather than whether you get any usefulness out of having the date on your wrist? Can't help you there buddy.

Buy new from an authorized dealer. It's a safer way to go unless you are a very savvy watch buyer. Buy what you like best, not what anonymous people prefer. Look at the money as an expenditure and not as an investment. You will lose money when you sell the watch if you are like 99% of all sellers. Expect to enjoy the watch and don't fret over scratches.

P.S. I own a GMT with the blue/black bezel and I am stunned by its beauty every time I wear it.
