He didn’t even have a DIY objective, just some good old fashioned curiosity that killed the cat and the bezel.

Glad he shared it though. Thanks OP

Out of curiosity, aside from breaks like this, how often do ceramic bezels break from use?

Several have mentioned that the ceramic bezel has moved the sport models from “tool watches” to jewelry. Nothing is indestructible, but how fragile is the bezel really in real world use?

That is an expensive experiment - I would rather leave it to the RSC to work on my watch.

If the infrequency of shattered bezel posts is any indication, it’s not really a problem.

Certainly not relative to crown alignment “issues”

Let's just say I wouldn't want to polish mine too much with a microfiber cloth.

Do you have diamond grit in your ultra soft cloth?

I was ... I can't think of too many situations where I would be reluctant to wear my 114060. It's been knocked around plenty and the bezel hasn't cracked yet. Seems to love the ocean!

I just read back through - haven’t seen anyone mention this.

OP how much would you charge me for the broken pieces of ceramic bezel you have, I would like to have them.

Is that better I guess my previous language was a bit ambiguous.

This exactly. No one ever told you, "If you don't know what you're doing, don't muck with it?"

You're right. No one asked the price for the broken pieces, but at first glance, I didn't think that's what you were asking, either.

Hey why the heck not. I wouldn’t have don’t it but kudos for being curious.

Not too bad a replacement price I thought it would be a lot more.

I always pry the bezel off with a knife though and never have I broken a ceramic insert, you gotta be careful though.
When I swapped out the bezel on my DJII for the WG one, the first shop I went to thought they could do it but after a week notified me that because of the larger watch size and older press, they couldn't. There is apparently only one shop in the Boston area with the correct tool.

Haha...good call.

I see ceramic bezels as equivalent to what people said about sapphire crystals when they first came out.

The issue with sapphire crystals is when they shatter, you're up for a movement service. No such problem with bezel insert.

Hey OP - I'll take that broken watch off your hands for MSRP

I hear ya, but that doesn’t happen often, and similar to the ceramic bezel there are many more pros than cons compared to what they replaced.

What I was meaning to say in my previous comment was directed at the criticisms of the ceramic bezel, e.g. hard but brittle, not a tool watch anymore, expensive to replace, etc...because I remember hearing similar comments when sapphire crystals started becoming the new normal.

I think now, most would agree that sapphire crystals are a good thing. IMO, the ceramic bezel is going through similar growing pains.
