Agree. I haven't worn my 520 since I bought the 509. I'd still take a ceramic, because it has a different look, but I doubt I'd end up wearing it much. Outside of the 16710, which I love for reasons I cannot even fully express, I pretty much just wear the PMs now in my little collection.

They are all SS, and even if a Mayer type hypes it up the price tends to fall back once people realise what has happened is not organic, like most pump and dumps.

Better to go grey on the SS Daytona if that is the watch you really want.

You're getting the 116509 from your AD as cheap as you'll find one BNIB anywhere.

Its a far nicer watch for $36k than the SS white is for the "grey" price of $27.5k, IMHO.

I could imagine that it gets discontinued next year. Since the blue dial is looking extremely nice, I see the price climbing.

Now having the SS and having recently tried in the WG, you are absolutely correct.
I don’t think I would ever wear the lightweight SS if I could feel that PM weight and stare at that incredible blue dial.

Lot of possibilities. How about...

4. You love the blue dial 509 and end up getting the 500. You sell the 500 for $20.4 for quick sale. Your net cost for the 509 is only $28K.

Excellent advice. A friend was on the fence with the DD RG olive dial and his AD told him he would be on top of the list for SS daytona. So what he offered to buy the DD in bundle together. Week later he received black dial daytona. Just an idea.

The blue is gorgeous, and I was tempted to buy one back when you could pick up a nicely used one for the low twenties. No way would I buy new and at (or nearly) MSRP.

And I'm not a fan of the ceramic, so there is that.

1. You may decide you love the white gold 116509 and live happily ever after.

2. You may get the 116500 you really wanted and sell your 116509. Assuming you sell for around $30k your total investment is around $18,400. You would save $6,600 in this scenario.
Numbers could change if the $36k from the AD does not include tax (tax here in Dallas would be ~$3k), and retail of the SS may go up by the time a one is available.

So, my vote is #1 above - get the WG and be happy with it, it's a great looking watch.

Why would you get this and still want a stainless one?

I think he really wants the SS and thinks the blue is the way to get one.

There could be a little upside for the blue dial, but it's unlikely. White gold, aside from extremely unique watches like the Unicorn, hasn't bee a big focus for Rolex sports watches at auction. White gold is likely used more in their sports watches nowadays as opposed to vintage models, so that could be part of the explanation, but I don't think it's enough of a factor to make one think that the price would go up that much, at least not anytime soon. The green dial YG Daytona is a unique situation, mostly because the dial colour is so striking that it makes it seem much different from the rest of the collection. The blue dial is nice, but not nearly different enough to really differentiate itself.

I really like this watch.

I think it’s far nicer than models with ceramic bezels.

I think the blue dial will age really well, and always be a little sought after. But yeah, WG never really blows it away.

I have no idea if it will be collectible, but I really like it. I don’t think it would be my first choice for that amount of money.

Based on his post and the current market conditions, which appears most likely to you?

Today I have phoned the AD and stated that another AD who has an 509 in stock would sell it to me now for $35k and guarantee a SS 500 to go with it once I pick it up (a little embellishment here........). I called original AD and told them the deal, but said I’d pay 36 because that’s what we agreed, IF they could get me a 500 before Christmas. They took the bait and said they’d have both in November or earlier. I’m now satisfied. Thank you all for your help making decision.
