He's growing fast so give him something he'll grow into and up with. A DJ41 is actually 39.8 mm and works for every occasion and makes a great gada piece especially in black, smooth bezel on oyster. just my .02 suggestion.

That's exactly my point. If you take average of all European countries (not just EU mind you, but actually all countries in Europe, including partially in Europe), I think average is still better than Americas (notice I didn't say USA or America, I said Americas, deliberately). Yet there will be outliers in both good and bad way in both places. Americas ranging from rich small gated communities in rich cities of rich states in the US to slums of Rio and Europe ranging all the way to calm and peaceful Iceland to some less peaceful places. So just saying "we understand it because we are European" makes no sense.

I think you should get him a No Date Sub.
He will grow into the watch. If you get him a 36mm he may grow out of it. Sub!!!! |

What do you own? Would want to get him something different. My son is only 11 and already asking about Rolex. He prefers yellow gold and color, but of course he does he is a kid. Would stick to the basics. I don’t know your son, but would stay away from classic watches and stick with more sports models.

I knew someone in high school that bought a Datejust with their own money at age 16-17. I respect that he earned/saved to buy what he wanted, even if it was a somewhat out-of-character purchase for a teenager.
If it was me - as a first watch gift for a 15 yo I’d go with a Seiko (SBDC101, Turtle, MM300), or possibly a Tudor or Omega. Let the passion grow from there, and then maybe add a Rolex at a milestone (graduation, etc). |

Meteorite GMT... I mean what do you expect OP, you'll get a ton of advice leaning on the side of no, which I agree. But you do you, probably any SS sport watch.

You don’t want any advice but unfortunately I can’t keep quiet about this..Seeing Im a high school teacher and have 40 years of experience with adolescents I think I am in a position to give some advice. I don’t see any problem with your son owning a Rolex. I do see problems if he were to wear it to school. Doing so will draw attention to him in ways which will create awkward situations. I had a student in the class (junior) with a submariner. When his peers realized it was real they joked about it all year long. He didn’t seem to mind but deep down I’m sure he did.

Agree 100%. If you’re filthy rich, maybe a Tudor bb58 for now and when he graduates a sub. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Or if some guy with a knife approaches him. Obviously we don’t know the kid or the OP, but I fear that even if he is the lost respectful kid and values a fine time piece, he is still a kid that would be wearing a watch that some people would stab for. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

But I get it, we don’t know your story or where you’re from. Maybe you drive around in a bullet proof car with body guards everywhere and so does your kid. If that’s the case, then sure why not. But if your kid might be alone somewhere with the watch, some forum members including myself are suggesting it can be a bad idea. But it’s your kid, your money, your thread Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thank you for your concern, but I'm not afraid of being robbed, otherwise I wouldn't even buy a Rolex. Believe it or not, there are still places in the world where it's safe to go out without worrying. |

If you are hell bent on buying a 15YO a Rolex, I would go with something more classic but sporty like a Sub or sub no date. I agree with others that you want to get something bigger that he will grow into vs small size that fits him now. I will also say that while you have asked to not be judged by this decision it is tough to not comment on something that could present a safety issue for a minor. I live in a very safe, monied area in the states and I am still aware of my surroundings and employ my "street smarts" routinely when I am out and about. A 15YO is sometimes oblivious to this and could run into trouble, even in a very safe area. Not worth the risk in my mind but to each their own.

Don't ask the question if you don't want an answer. I'm personally in the camp that "There aren't many crimes so it's okay" rather misses that the crimes that do happen probably happen to the easiest targets, like children wearing expensive jewelry. For that reason, my answer to the Op's question is also "none." I'm not saying that his child isn't mature enough, or that he doesn't live in a generally safe place. Those aren't factors in my answer. |
