<<< GMT Master 2 -16710 opinion >>>

I realize that this is not a vintage reference, but I specifically posted in this forum because I know many of the regular contributors have a keen eye for polish and condition. I know the watch has been polished but is it overly so?

Please let me know your thoughts on this example a 2001 P serial 16710.

I truly appreciate your assistance as I am considering a purchase but I have not seen it in person due to where the seller and I are located.

Very hard to provide input based on those pictures but would guess it is polished just looking at the lugs in the second pic. But very limited detail to go off. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad example though. Things like what it comes with, price, etc would be more of a factor for me with something like this.

Thank you for the reply. I’ll see if the seller can send me better pictures.

The side pictures show fish eye effect of lug holes, and the holes are pretty close to the outer edge. It does seem a bit over polished, so maybe the price will reflect that.

Those pics really don't allow for a proper review. Hopefully the seller will be happy to send more.

Exactly. I couldn't make a decision based on the pics above.

Thanks guys, I realize the pictures aren’t the best. I’ve been around here long enough to know I shouldn’t have bothered

Just devil-advocating here a bit.... And Tin-Hat-on, but bit of polishing doesn't bother me much at all if piece is original.

I just add it to my snag list to help buy it closer to (or pref.below!?) trade than retail, and I know I can wear it wherever I want, and I'm not anywhere near being 'upside down' on it, if mkt drops like you're trying to catch a falling knife! (As it does every 13-14 yrs on average) and as per mkt now !

One other thing is the B and P thing...I dont sell much, but have found that nobody expects a box and papers on 6542/1675/16750/16700 or 16760....but they do on 16710 esp if later lumi' flip-lock one and a small but goodly % of buyers are not interested as such, if watch is bereft of papers.

Similarly 5510/6538/5512/5513/early14060/early 16610 buyers seem not too bothered... but from the 16610LV onwards they are!

Just an observation I'm sharing and part of my PhD research attempts to map this to many articles and internet forum launches in 2005/6 ... Where the Zeitgeist becomes 'keeping your paperwork safe' 'box and papers add to value to your watch' etc, becomes topics of debate that we old guard simply never discussed in the 70/80 and early 90s :-)

That last photo makes it look like it was polished quite a bit judging by the soft lug holes. Not horrible, but not very crisp.

Have you considered a tritium model? I have a 2000 16710 and it's great. But a tritium model would be awesome.

Needs better light for sure. It’s backlit in many of the photos. The seller can make a cheap light box with white printer paper. The crown guards don’t look bad but are not unpolished. One of the shots the lug holes look sharper on the non crown side. Then the crown side lug holes look polished in another. Hope to see this in better light.
I loved my old 16710 and I think you’d love having one as well. I ended up going matte dial Pepsi and ceramic but, like any watch crazy person, I think I need my 16710 back!

Brian,
As mentioned, lots of cupping on the lug hole in the last photo. The first photo shows me a rounded top of the lug. I like mine to be really flat and crisp, in an ideal scenario.

I’ve owned ones in this condition, and also in pristine condition. Anything can be fixed down the road, with case recutting.

If you are like me and you can get a good price, I’d buy it and enjoy it for a while and then have the case redone in several years. With the next service.

If you want it to be crisp, this ain’t it. It’s had several polishes. And someone rolled the top of the lugs when they did it, IMO. That is common. I’ve done it myself, polishing. I don’t polish with anything other than a soft wheel, now.

But this one is not objectionable to me. It’s ok.

Yes, overly polished IMO. What's worse, still, is that it's unevenly polished. Check those lugs out. But I'm picky as hell - *see my signature* :D

Helpful to know what the asking is, and whether it comes as a full set.

I wouldn't, however. Plenty of minty "unpolished" examples around. Buyers' market today.

Be patient, and buy the best condition example you can afford ~
