Does a service crown affect value on a vintage watch?
Hi All, I sent my rolex 16800 in for a service to an independent. I already gave the go ahead to have a new crown and tube installed which will be a proper rolex replacement. The old crown did feel rough closing it and only had about 1 good turn instead of the normal 3-4 turns.
I understand that crowns are consumable parts and are meant to be replaced and shouldn't be a concern. Is it fair to say that having an authentic replacement crown will not affect the value? Can you spot a replacement crown vs. original crown? I know I would rather have the watch functioning properly. Just wanted to get your overall thoughts and make sure i'm not missing anything. |

Would doubt if just changing the winding crown would have any effect on the value of your watch, main things not to change dial hands etc.

Not a big deal. In your case, a 703 should be found without too much hassle. Maybe ask your watchmaker to replace with a period correct crown and tube.

Hi,
Not a bad decision to replace a defective crown. As Swaini said, 703 crowns are probably as expensive as later 704, not a big issue on the value side. For a 700 or a 702 crown my opinion would have been different as these are more expensive. Yes crowns are aesthetically different.

At my watch’s first service, at the Beverly Hills RSC, Rolex swapped out the crown without asking. I see no problem with this, as I trust they did that because ur was necessary.
My half century old classic car’s original shocks and brake calipers are long gone. The factory windshield was replaced by the previous owner because of a crack. The original engine and transmission remain, and that’s what’s important to value. A watch’s crystal and crown should be replaced when necessary. These are factory made watches. If a watch were, literally, Paul Newman’s Daytona, replacing the crown might be a different story. |
