Ebay??

After reading about so many people getting scammed, I’m terrified to just wire someone across the country 15k and cross my fingers. I would think at least if buying from a online AD or ebay I can contest the charge with my credit card company?

I’d love to buy from a member, but hating taking that kinda risk.

Thoughts?

I would buy from Ebay after performing the same due diligence as any other sale platform. If the seller is a well established brick and mortar store all the better. As a buyer, Ebay and Paypal mostly behind you not the seller.

You can use PayPal or credit card with Trusted Sellers. Not sure why you would buy from another other channel outside of an AD.

Everything depends on who the seller is

A lot of the same sellers on eBay as Chrono24 and Amazon. I did get notice that eBay is collecting sales tax (5-8%) for a number of states, and will 1099 sellers, so in addition to all the 10% selling fees and 3% PayPal fees, it is becoming more costly to buy or sell. A lot of times if you see a legit watch on Ebay you can contact the seller directly if they are a storefront or selling on a forum and get it for at least 15% lower.

Ebay is pretty safe
You have buyer protection if you pay with PayPal
AND
EbAy is weighted to the buyer

You should still check ant possibility here for Red Flags, but in general that + Ebay is pretty safe

If you have the knowledge to know what you are looking at then eBay is now pretty safe for a buyer with the buyer protection that PayPal offers. If you prefer not to use PayPal then you can use your credit card which should also give you their own form of buyer protection.

eBay safer than most but full of fakes, counterfeits and frankenstuff. Especially vintage.

on ebay, you have the option of 3 protections pretty much. ebay/PayPal/cc if you used it as a payment through PayPal. With recent law in affect, most/all items on ebay is taxed automatically, you wont see it till you on checkout. Better off buying from AD if possible but should consider the taxes that in it.

Personally, I would NEVER risk that kind of money to a complete stranger. I would have to see what I was buying and from who. I always say, if you can't afford to lose it, don't risk it.

I bought my Grand Seiko SBGJ001 from EBay. Seller was insistent on using PayPal. It was immaculate and had everything included, including sales receipt. Saved over 25% off retail. We emailed back and forth for about 5 days

As far as paying tax on ebay, you can easily check the list of states, and see if you are in one of those states. Also ebay only 1099s sellers with large sales....number of sales, and total dollar anount. Most sellers aren't in that category. Although Rolex watch sellers probably are.

I would use eBay due to the protection and seller ratings.

I agree with most that eBay generally backs the buyer but be aware that for a high value sale like this if the seller disputes your claim then eBay will want you prove your case i.e. go to a dealer etc and get proof there is fault with the watch. Example, I sold an Omega on eBay many years ago and the buyer claimed a return because the watch was hard to wind. I didn’t agree so I disputed the refund so eBay asked the buyer to go to an Omega AD and get it checked out. He failed to prove there was a fault so they sided with me. Point is they will back you but you have to prove your case first and they won’t just give you a refund just like that. Personally if I’m spending 15k then I’m going to one of the many trusted sellers here. Good luck.
