Hi - Just wondering if any experts can tell me about this Smiths watch? It was a long service gift to a relative from British Rail. I'm guessing it was a budget/midrange watch. I haven't been wearing it for a while but just treated myself to a new handmade leather strap from finwatchstraps, which I'm very happy with and I think is in-keeping with the down to earth look of a retired railwayman's watch. I'd guess the manufacture date was at youngest 70s or 80s based on logic from when he would have retired, but I'm not going to take the back off with my lack of tools and expertise. Can anyone provide any clues as to age?

Thanks. I'm enjoying reading on this forum and learning a lot from a standing start. I see the "Made in England" Smiths are the more collectable items, which mine is, although you cant read it very well due to the high dome of the crystal. I clearly need to get myself a flatter glass.

It looks more like late 1950s. It's probably 9K gold and there should be a hallmark inside the caseback. Any watch repairer should be able to open it. Get a clear photo of the hallmark and we can help date it.

Adam, I don't often comment on how nice a watch is because they all are and yours deserves a special mention, that is a beauty, absolutely breathtaking. Many, many congratulations, it's stunning.

Yes, I've since sold both of the AM's in the original post. For the money they are good value and well constructed and because they are pretty tricky to get direct from the Website, they tend to hold their value. I sold both of the AM's for what I paid........ but I have now got four other Smith's, as I rather like the 36mm PRS25 Everest and the Commando with non-Mercedes hands
