Would you buy a watch with a dent in the case?

Hi all - just curious to hear your thoughts here. Would you consider buying a 16710 with a dent in the case? If so, what kind of discount would you expect to pay for it?

I would expect a very large discount, then i would have it laser welded and wear it. This has to be a good enough deal to put work into it and still come out way ahead. Otherwise, their are better examples you can buy.

I’m thinking $7500-8k and i would be happy.

To be honest those lugs look pretty untouched, I’m going off the fact this must be pre 2004 because of the drilled lugs and the spring bar end is well recessed so I doubt this has been polished or messed around with much.

Whilst I’d much prefer one without damage, when you are buying 20+ year old pieces sometimes you have to weigh up options. You can have a seemingly undamaged watch that can look pretty bad, deviating away from the original look and shape with fixes a long the way. Or you can have an unserviced unpolished untouched watch complete with dents and scrapes which if not too bad may be preferable.

That doesn’t look too bad and can be fixed to new. I’d push for 500-1k£ off for that.

Good looking watch, easily repaired if need be.

Market price is market price. If somebody said to me "what discount will you give me", I would move on.

When I got my 16610lv I made sure it was unpolished and worn. Love the scratches.

I would if it’s something I want. If the dent is that bad, the only “discount” expected would be the amount it would cost me to send it off for laser welding and refinish. Minor dings, dents, and scratches are expected findings on used watches

If you plan to wear the watch often and keep it long term then yes, I'd buy a watch like that. This kind of wear and tear can and likely will happen if you're a normally active person who wears his watches.

If you're someone who will keep watches in a safe until it's time for a photo or just to look at them, maybe pass and find another example.

More importantly, has it been serviced and is everything running well? Once that's established I'd say it's such a small mark compared to what can happen I wouldn't let it stop me.

Only you can decide if this will bother you after the heightened excitement of a new watch purchase wears off. Good luck!


Just to add, I'm no expert on spotting case softness/refinishing and especially from photos. If SearChart notices it's been over polished on top of the damage then I'd have reservations about buying.

Yes, looking on my iphone. Looked pretty good to me.
But, if you have a bigger screen I believe you. Lets see more photos and I shall have another look on my laptop, too.

LE: I did see now the second pic. Yes, all edges are rounded! It has been well polished.
In this case, my answer is no. Not worth it on that condition and with that massive dent.....unless its a bargain.

Why not. How much of a discount would I expect? Price of a heavily polished piece minus however much it would cost to service and laser weld it. Then I can either guiltlessly wear it and not care about scratches/blemishes or send it in, get it serviced, laser welded and polished.

If the case was otherwise raw and not polished like your example I would buy it and send for laser welding and refinishing. I would expect $2-3K discount to cover that and service.
