Do you keep your collection running?

I’ve always kept every watch in my collection running as i like to see how they perform month over month, even if a few of them only see minimal wrist time per month. I don’t use a winder for the automatics, I have a system where I just wind them every 36 hours (or as close to it as possible). I wind my manuals every morning.

Is there a downside to doing this? Am I better off letting them run out of power and then just winding a couple of times per month or when I pick one to wear? I don’t want them to sit idle for long periods of time but am I actually putting unnecessary strain on the movements by keeping them running at all times?

Curious what others do. I don’t have a massive collection, just 10 watches so the routine is actually something I quite enjoy.

For me personally, they only run while in use.

My watches with complications (perpetual calendar, annual calendar, triple calendar) stay running all the time.

The rest of my watches rotate in and out of a safe deposit box. So, for the month they're at home, they run all the time. And then they rest for four months until their next cycle at home.

Only run whilst in use

Time keeping can be vastly different on the wrist vs in the watch box. Admittedly more sensitive with other brands

Still service them every 10 years or so. I extend it as I rotate a lot

If it is something that you enjoy doing, do it.

The only downside is a sore thumb.

I'm with the majority. Only run it while wearing. If one has been out of rotation for over a month+ I'll usually give it a wind and just let it run until it dies again if its still not in rotation, just to get the lubricants moving.

Only run mine if in use. Running adds wear. Winders take up excessive room as well.

I'm in the minority. Mine run constantly on orbitas. My oldest continuous running is an omega 300m diver that has been running since 2012 and keeps -1.0 spd. I pull out the crown to catch it up every other month roughly.

$750 service includes replacement of all worn movement parts for the same price as an unworn watch... same cost whether you use it or not.

I have multiple high end winders, but don‘t use them much.

Only run my watches when I’m wearing, I’m of the opinion they have no memory so can’t remember when they were last used. Jay

Depends. If I'm not wearing a watch with a 2 day power reserve but I want to wear it after 3-4 days, then yes, I'll keep it wound in that time. Otherwise no, I see no point in keeping a watch I won't wear for weeks wound.

Do you keep your collection running?

I wind when I wear but once a month I wind them all and let em stretch their legs.

That.

And I do not use winders. Just have no interest in that.

There is no annoyance for me to set a watch when rotated in, even for increased complications such as found with the Sky-Dweller.

In fact, I enjoy the interaction of winding and setting. Part of the hobby for me.

To each their own.

This is an interesting study in anthropomorphism. Either way every 10 years you completely disassemble and replace these low mass gears riding on a film of oil... so the correct answer is it doesn't matter but but but excessive wear!

If you ever reach the 10 years, that is.

For sure, but I've been getting 7-10 from ETA movements in omegas since 2000 and even if it were only 5 or 7 years I don't see what difference it really makes. Doesn't the movement have its worn parts replaced as advertised?

On the other hand I've seen my watches such as a Rolex DJ run perfectly until taking a 2 month nap and then running poorly for a week or so. That seems like wear to me.

I was gifted a 4 watch winder from some colleagues but it's just sitting in the box. I don't really feel a need for a winder because all my watches with dates are quick set. No perpetual / annual calendars

I might feel differently if I had a watches that were more cumbersome to set.
