Which Panerai model should I buy?
I am considering purchasing my first Panerai. Any suggestions on a particular model for a first time buyer?
Thanks! |

The classic answer to this question is 000, 111, 372. But, to find what you really want, consider a few questions....
Any size constraints? Do you want the crown guard or do you prefer the look of the Radiomirs? Do you want several functions, or just time and/or date? Sandwich or sausage dial? Manual or automatic? What kind of case material? Dial color? Lume color? Do you have a boutique or AD nearby where you can try several and answer some of these questions? |

I got a 562 as my first, and what made it for me was the simple dial, but not least the feel of the titanium, so much lighter then the steel watches...

422 is my current favorite, but if you can find a 111 with a sandwich dial and ETA that's a great starter in my opinion.

Also depends on if you're buying a one and only or if you're starting a collection.
A lot of people here will guide you to the base models for your first and with good reason. However, they're not for me so I didn't go there. Head to a boutique if there's one in travelling distance, or a well-stocked AD and try as many as you can. Assuming your wrist can take the 1950 Luminor, my recommendation would be 312 or 359. If you're going for a one and only and money is not an issue, 233.

I was at the Panerai Boutique in Miami’s Art District today. If you get a chance, take a trip down there and you can see just about everything they make. It’s a two-story Boutique that has amazing Panerai DNA decor throughout. You’ll either find exactly what you’re looking for or be very confused. Lol
As for my recommendation, I would lean towards a Luminor case to get started. At least that’s how I got started a couple of weeks ago.

Depends
How big are your wrists. Do you prefer automatic or manual movement? Do you want an older vintage style or modern? Most would say check out the tried and true 111. You get sandwich dial, display back to see the awesome (older style ) movement. Good luck and take your time. Oh, radiomir or luminor?

I went Pam 560 and I do not regret it, very classic plain dial. 8 day reserve is a massive plus, so easy to wear in rotation or just never having to worry about if it’s going to wind down.

I've got the PAM590 and love the 8-day reserve as well. Boy the 560 has such a classic dial. I miss the 9 & 3 on my 590, but do like the seconds hand that the 590 gives. Btw: My PAM104 never gets any love when people recommend 1st Panerai's....oh well. I love my 104. All great recommends. Start with manual vs. auto, case size, dial, etc, etc. It gets easier to sort through when you start checking boxes IMHO. Good luck |

I would start with a 44mm standard Luminor case with a black dial. Stick to the base models or the Marina models. The logo models are great introductory pieces. From there you can investigate more historical cases such as the Radiomir, Radiomir 1940, or Luminor 1950. As others have mentioned, you can break the aforementioned rule and just go right to a PAM372 which is basically a base model in the older 1950 case. 47mm may be a little off-putting which is why I recommended starting with the modern Luminor case which typically runs 44mm.
