I have been wanting to add a GMT watch with a light colored dial to my small collection. After ruling out the Explorer II due to its size, I began to look at other brands.
Having an hour to kill in between meetings yesterday, and being in the area, I stopped at the only local Grand Seiko AD. I had seen a few pictures before but never had seen a Grand Seiko in person. The watches that the owner showed me were absolutely stunning and oozed quality and attention to detail. I am no horological expert, but these watches must be seen in person.

A Grand Seiko GMT is going to be my next watch for certain. I just need to decide which one of these three:
SBGJ001, SBGM021, or SBGM023

Take your time. All are good. It depends if you want a little more dressy or sporty? Sure the sbgm021 does look a tad more dressy than the 2 as it's on croco.

Me, personally after seeing these 2 models as well as SBGM025, would go for SBGJ001 as that hi-beat is something else. To have a GMT is one thing, but to have it on hi-beat, it's a winner to me. If only funds would permit, I would have brought her home!

I liked the SBGM025 in pictures and also in the flesh and when I put it on. It's lovely! But I can't help thinking how similar it is to the EXP-II; with numerals on the bezel and white dial. Though I appreciate the 44GS styled case now. WOW!
But I was thinking if the bezel got badly scratched up (I don't think I can bare that sight) or when the numerals starts to fade? Yes, i'm thinking too much but that's what happened to exp-II yea (in the very long run)?

With that in mind, I turned to SBGJ001. I appreciate how discreet the 24-h numerals are placed; not too big, not focused in the middle (like in the case of SBGM021). So I like that.
The linen-like dial is just stunning! And to have a 44GS-style case with a discreetly beating Hi-beat, i'm sold!

Anyways, take your time, all are great watches to have in the stable!

Was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to a good store in Tokyo. Heading down there soon and am tempted to pick up a grand seiko; any particular models to look out for? Im not overly familiar with the GS range....

Yodobashi camera seems to keep coming up as an option, but are there any others that may have more competitive pricing?

BIC Camera is a major chain store, but one thing to be aware of, is that certain models are Master Stores only – like the Snowflake (SBGA011) above, and LE ones, assuming there are some still unsold.
You'll see models that are only available in the Wako store, which is Seiko owned.

Even at full retail, excluding the 8% sales tax (have your passport with you to get the net price), you're still going to return well up in comparison to domestic prices, even with a decent discount applied.

There are so many different models to choose from, you really need to look at them yourself, to see which grabs your attention.
You could certainly do worse than the Snowflake, but if titanium isn't your thing, then SBGA111 or 127.
If Spring Drive isn't of interest, then the SBGH or SBGJ (if you like GMT) Hi Beats (36K vph) are worth looking at.
If you like bigger than 41mm or 39mm designs, then the SBGA029/31 (SS/Ti) Dive watches are ones to consider, as well as SBGE models with their sapphire bezel.
There were some cracking LEs of those larger ones, SBGE021/29 and SBGA071 especially.

There's just so many different nice ones, you've no other choice but to hit the Google images search and try to absorb it all in.

So I got to try on the SBGA081 and SBGJ013 this time round. Unfortunately i had another watch i wanted to buy this time so I didnt end up picking up a GS, but its definitely something I want to get in the future.

Both watches were incredibly light and fit my wrist very well. The SBGJ was definitely taller and I'm not sold on the choice of yellow for the GMT hand, but the movement was fabulous through the display caseback. I also prefer the case shape of the SBGA.

My only complaint with the two watches was the bracelet, which whilst well finished still felt a little bit underwhelming to me, especially the clasp. Its no worse than older rolex bracelets though.

I had a chance to buy the quartz models as well but I prefer mechanical watches and will probably save up some money to get one next time instead.
