I must agree that it's sad for the watch, for sports or things of the sort I always wear a Rolex, they are tanks and in case of some serious scratches you can polish it there's enough metal on it, whereas on a Nautilus, especially 5711 and 5712, it's so thin that polishing it would take off half the metal on it.

I would say more than a little battered, for me it is seriously beat up…

Great piece i think the original Genta case was more robust than the 57xx series.

Have seen ones for sale that are close to that level of "lived in," I think it is fair to say its value remains for sentimental value more than any other reason.

In fairness the bulk of the wear may have been from his father before he received it? The case appears to have fine scratches covering it but I don't see any severe dings or dents. The bracelet fit surprisingly tight and just as a new model, it would not be uncommon for the bezel to be replaced if need, all in all I would think the watch could be brought back to fine condition If owner requested at service.

The submariner I wore for 20 years day in day out looked quite similar with the exception the sub bracelet was ready for the scrap heap in the end, whereas the Patek bracelet actually, to me, seemed to hold up far better.

I am curious what Patek can do regarding older case parts, we know they will always replace mechanical parts that are needed, I wonder if they also would have a supply or original manufacturing process remaining for things like a vintage bezel?

If Patek has NOS bezels, that would be great. I would imagine if this piece could be restored to period correct and excellent condition that it would be worth quite a bit. That dial may be worth quite a bit alone.

Agree on that. The dial is quite unique along with the hands and markers.

Does anyone know what the "o Swiss o" means ?

This is awesome and everyone asking whether or not a 5711 is for them should read.

I love it as well. Good for him. If I actually wore my YM1 for sailing I'd want it to look just as beat up when I'm gone.

That's awesome. Just wish I could keep a watch long enough to get that kind of wear and patina...

That's really incredible. I give huge kudos to anyone who actually uses the nice things they own rather than having a safe queen or garage queen.

Respect! And this is coming from a guy who just got his Nautilus 5711 sized today. I guess scratches will happen inevitably.....

Since the dawn of time and for the 99% of all watch owners, owning and wearing one watch has been the norm. I applaud him for using the watch as a tool. Although, it's a curious situation when many congratulate him for using a product as it was intended--as an everyday watch. "Way to go Jim, driving that new blue car every day. Bold decision. I'd have bought several more to keep the miles off the blue one."

I suspect that it looks better in real life than the pictures let on. Nautilus as a workhorse - I never imagined it. This thread should have been called ‘Beauty and the Beating’ Thanks for sharing!
