Omega Speedmaster Pro (Moon Watch) or Tudor Black Bay 58?
Hi everyone,
I recently confirmed with my dealer that I shouldn’t expect to get the Rolex GMT Pepsi for at least a year (estimated), and I am considering other watches in the meantime. I was initially set on a Black Bay 58, since it is a great value (in house movement, and robust build). I recently started looking at other brands and now considering a Omega Speedmaster Moon watch (hesalite) due to the versatility. My only concerns are the hesalite crystal and accuracy, since it’s not COSC. I don’t mind my watches getting beat up and showing character, but I do mind if the watch is gaining / losing a significant amount of time. I haven’t owned one before I and thought I’d inquire from current Moonwatch owners. Thanks! |

Very tough decision. The moonwatch is a classic. I have never had an issue with accuracy with mine. Of course, I am not one that likes to keep the time down to the second. The hesalite does scratch easy. You can buff most scratches out with polywatch. The 58 is soooo cool, but if you haven't owned a moonwatch before I would go that route.

I own a moonwatch and the original burgundy Black Bay. I enjoy the thought of owning the moonwatch and I don’t think I would ever sell it. But I enjoy wearing the B.B. more. I find the moonwatch a little difficult to wind. Never had a scratch to my hesalite, have my polywatch ready.

Hesalite does scratch, but I use a Novus plastic polish and it works like a charm. I don't worry about it. The Speedmaster is a fantastic watch. Between the Speedmaster and the BB58, it's not a contest for me - Omega all the way. I'm a big Rolex fan, and own a few, but if I had to cut down to one watch, it would probably be my Speedmaster.

Icon vs fashion.
Love the Tudor. I do. Love the brand as a whole. But these two watches are not on the same level. Not a chance.

I think if you ask this in the Rolex section you will get similar answers.
Speedy. Easy.

I recommend having a Speedmaster Pro in your collection. I control the rate and accuracy of mine using different resting positions: dial-up, mine drops a couple of seconds/day; crown-up, it gains a couple of seconds/day. I wind it every morning, whether I'll wear it that day or not (I alternate between it and my Submariner), and then I just change its resting position as needed to keep it within a few seconds of true time.
As others have noted, the crystal is easily maintained with Polywatch or something similar. Mine only needs it once/year. The watch oozes character, with an intriguing blend of shapes and finishes. Legibility is outstanding. It works well on its bracelet, but even better on a strap. I'm looking forward to making the seasonal swap to the black alligator strap that my Speedmaster lives on during the cooler months! It's a truly enjoyable watch to live with. |

Agree speedy is a must have especially when looking at watches over 3-4k+. It better be a darn monster to skip over the speedy for. IMO of course

I like the Tudor but the Omega Speedmaster Professional just might be my favorite watch and I own watches that cost over ten times its price. In my opinion, it competes with the Daytona and between the two I would opt for the Omega if I could only choose one. I didn't want hesalite so I opted for the sapphire sandwich, which has the advantage of front and back sapphire crystals and an upgraded movement. It's just as, if not more, iconic than any Rolex.

Speedy. I had mine since April, no scratches on hesilite and has been running about +12 sec per day. Something about the matte black dial and warm hesilite. It’s mesmorizing, and also gives you versatility in the mechanical movement versus the auto.

My username is TudorTuesday, and *even I* say the speedmaster wins this battle.
If I may be so bold, I also suggest that you look at older models - part of the fun of a speedy is finding the exact combination of things that speak to you. Stepped or flat dial, various bracelets/straps, hesalite vs sapphire, caseback options, movements, crown guards, straight or twisted lugs, tritium or luminova - and that's all just for speedy professionals! Enjoy the hunt. |

Tudor has no claim to fame. Their heritage appears to be that's of a down market Rolex. Intended as a low budget alternative to Rolex. If I'm grossly mistaken, please shout it out. But under no circumstances would I equate a Tudor to an Omega. Not even a Tag. A Speedie will always command respect and always be well regarded. They will always have a classic appearance. Tudor has the goofy hour hand and, I just do not get the appeal.

Having had both a Hesalite and BBnETA in my collection, I can tell you the Speedy is just another category. A Speedmaster is a Speedmaster in the same way a Daytona is a Daytona and should not be compared with others. Get the Speedy, you won't regret it.

+1 I called it Speedy rule. Anytime I am looking at a watch below $4k, I always compared it to speedy. And so far there’s nothing better than speedy. |

I own three Speedmasters. I will own a BB58. The correct answer is probably Speedmaster, I believe. But as an everyday, do-everything watch, I think I'd take a BB58.
