Another option I suppose is to get it serviced, ultrasonic cleaned and then to give it a light polish myself with something like Cape Cod Polishing cloth? Have watched a few videos on using them.

Watch is now in the hands of Christian Dannemann (watchguy.co.uk)

for full service and potentially replacement of crown and crystal using genuine Rolex parts for anything that is needed.

Bracelet will eventually, maybe later in the year go for repair with either Seth in Essex or Michael Young.

Decided not to polish the watch for now! If I decide to in the future will either use Seth or wpc.uk.com

Great decision, my watch is in for a service (no polishing either) and at the same time as Michael Young has my bracelet, no way on earth was i paying Rolex £800+ for a new strap when the original could be repaired.

I would get a new bracelet. It will still be your dad's watch.

A friend recently had his father's old Submariner serviced. It got a new case, bracelet, the works. It is fantastic and he is not sorry. There comes a time when we should say goodbye to old worn out stuff, especially when it can easily be replaced with something new. I would understand keeping a bracelet if a replacement was unobtainable.

Think about this, some years down the track a new replacement bracelet will no longer be obtainable. If you do insist on fixing the old one, then at least get a new one as a spare.
