Sorry guys. If your over 5 foot tall then a 36mm watch is too small. Day date size is now 40mm in 2019.

I also wore an air king 34 mm and it was a great watch. 36 is a great size, I think it wears better than my gmt.

Sorry, but it’s all subjective. I love the skydweller in your avatar but for me on my 7 inch wrist that would look huge.

I own five watches- 32mm thru 40mm and wear them all. I have a 7” wrist. The 32mm was given as a retirement gift to to a male manager at Swiss Metro for 25 years of service. I purchased and wear often. The 36mm DJ TT champagne Roman oyster is for dress. The 40mm black diver is versatile. The SS Oysterdate is 34mm and looks appropriate for most events. So it depends on the watch, occasion and your mood.

The classic still looks amazing in 36

Thank you Dan for the compliment! Much appreciated Brother. Im a new member and the comment I made I realise is offensive to some but my wrist is also 7 inches and flat. Does the old way of thinking I.e if the lugs hangover the edge of your wrist really still stand today vs say the RO 15500 which just replaced the 15400 (a bit under radar given the 11.59 release. The damn things hardly fit anyone’s wrist without some overhang. This might be a quick way to get me banned from this forum. Which is great by the way love reading the opinions and views. Fantastic bunch of people here

Asking the opinion of a younger member, I think both are fine for a man today. My wrist measures at 7.5 inches and I have a 36mm Tudor Oyster Prince and a 40mm Rolex. I think both are fine with the 36 being more versatile a size for casual or dress purposes if you consider those things important.

I find the 36mm a bit more conservative in size for whatever that's worth.

Thanks Peter, not really sure about the lugs hanging over the wrist thing. I guess I have never cared to wear a larger watch, and to me personally, the old 40 gmt master would be as big as I would ever go. I had the maxi case sub and ended up selling it because I didn’t care for the lug size. Thinking the only newer watch I would consider is the Daytona due to the smaller size, love the look of the skydweller, only wishing it was a 40 or heck even a 38. No way that will ever happen. I guess I’m a little old school and like the 60s 70s and 80s era watches.

When I went in to buy my 39mm Exp I tried on an OP 36. I was really surprised how small it looked to me. I’m 6’0” with a wrist just under 7.

It's a timeless size and fits most people IMO. Only situations it might look small are guys with hug wrists over 7.5".

Don’t let anyone tell you what size is or isn’t too small. Try it on and you’ll know if it works for you.
I’m 6’2, 204lbs and have a 6.75” wrist. I’ve had plenty of people tell me 36mm is too small. This is my OP 114200 in 34mm. Perfection.

Is 36mm still a good size these day ?

I have a DD36...Ive been tempted to get the 40mm but whenever I try it on it doesn’t quite sing to me the way the 18238 does..it’s not the statement I’m trying to make. If I could have any, I’d rather have a pink Stella dial 1803 for a more interesting, retro style gold Rolex. I actually think it makes a more sublime statement as opposed to the 228238..but it also just depends who’s wearing it. I think there are right and wrong watches for everyone. It’s whatever you can pull off...really not about the case size or wrist size at all.

I like the contrast of rotating with a 40mm BLNR.
Or occasionally the 41mm Blackbay. I had a DJ2 and i sold it for the smaller day date. I don’t want all of my watches the same size

If you don't have super big wrists than 36 is fine to wear. Doesn't mean you can't wear bigger or smaller than that, just wear what you like. People don't care.

To Jg422: Sir, this DD is gorgeous! I had quite the same but this tapestry dial is really beautiful.

About the size, for Rolex with a bracelet (and not a strap), I consider that those watches are what we call in French "Montres-bracelet" which suggests that the whole has to be figured out as a bracelet with a watch. This is by the way the reason why I prefer thinner lugs that visually are more integrated in the whole shape and that go more smoothly from the median line of the case to the bracelet.

So what? Well I personally think that seen from the top of the watch it is better to see a little bit of the bracelet at 12h and 6h rather than having the case totally or almost totally covering the wrist.

What has to be seen then, if we observe this rule? At least one link at 6 and one at 12? And no more than 2 ? (For an Oyster band. Add 1 to this if President or Jubilee).

The minimum is for perceiving the "bracelet" aspect. The maximum is because the watch would look too small beyond that.

And I see beautiful pictures of 36mm and 34mm here, in that perspective.

That were my 2 cents...

Now, having said that, while I love the Explorer 42mm and consider buying one some day, I have to test it again in order to see how it looks on my 7 inches wrist...

I love watches of all sizes. And I am "man enough" even though I'm a fairly big guy, to wear 36mm and even 34mm watch sizes, without worrying about my manhood.

The 36mm DD has a lot of amazing options. And I like the fact you can get it on a leather strap with deployant buckle as well.

A lot of ADs these days are saying that the smaller size watches are now becoming more popular.

Anyway, try 'em on and see what you think. Make sure you take a look at them in the mirror as well at the AD.

Good luck!
Carl

I've yet to find a 36mm watch that really grabbed me. Maybe if I got a Pt DD in 36mm I'd wear it. My 1803, 16013, and 116000 really never made me want to keep them on my wrist.

36mm DD in combination with the President is perfection from a design perspective. The watch itself does not look small on any wrist size

i got a dd 36 recently after a 40mm gmt

it feels right because its a dress watch,

a 36mm gmt would be all wrong.

28mm for ladies, i dont like ladies wearing mens stuff and sizes, not for me.

I think the 36mm is a perfect size. Its what you think and how you wear it that matters. I tried on various 36's, 40mm YM, 41mm date just before I settled.

For my small wrists I heavily favour the 36mm. But I know not everyone in the world has small wrists like me. Ignoring the fact that I have small wrists, I find that the 36mm and pre-ceramic range of Rolex to be much better proportioned. The new stuff at times is either too square or too dinner platey or too much dial. I think the best Rolex could do was start offering 39mm in classic case design not the square square design they currently do.

It depends on the person of course. If you're a small man with thin wrists it's a great size. For someone bigger it's definitely too small.

This is one of my friend's DJ. He's not a small guy but it looks great on his wrist.
