Congrats Sir....and a great story to go along with it.

Interesting series of events....AD teases you to be ready for the watches you have been waiting for, he never calls and watches go to someone higher up on the list, then you get the call for the Pepsi, you buy it, he wants you to do him a favor and pass on it and promises another favor in return after not keeping a promise last year.... So now you wonder what comes next....will this mean that you will have to wait longer on your Daytona and Skydweller because you didn't do the AD the favor he wanted? I certainly hope not... keep us up to date, I am really curious to see how this will all work out.

Got the Call - Incoming GMT II Pepsi

Great collection and congratulations.
Curious why do you have 2 same watches with different bezel inserts?
Is it because of hype only?
I guess its stupid to say no to free money.
Yes, I am jealous.

To be honest, I used to like the Batman better. But I had never seen a Pepsi in person until I took delivery. The blue looks so much different in person than in pictures (In a good way). It just pops. The Pepsi has grown on me more each day I wear it. I would definitely say it is my favorite of the two.

Thank you! Yeah, I actually thought a lot about this. Wondering if I'll ever get a call again for a new watch from this AD. There were a couple other things that happened during the conversation when I took delivery that are unimportant now, but made me feel self conscious about my relationship moving forward.

So you are the one that stole my rightful BLRO ... I was next in line! I’m the whale! They called me first! But I was on the line with my doctor who was telling me I only have a year to live... (... sobbing).

J/K just thought I’d role play there as the guy who missed out.

That's a great question. My wife asked me the same thing. I also really want a white face Daytona and some day a Platona. Which are also very similar to what I have in the black face Daytona.

I guess this is a multiple part answer of why people collect watches and more specifically why I collect watches. I love talking watches with other WIS, I love horology and the movements of the different references, I love watching "Talking Watches" vids on the Hodinkee channel on Youtube and hearing how passionate other collectors are about their collections and why they collect. I would ultimately like to have a collection of Daytonas; contemporary and vintage examples.

I grew up in a single mother household in a low income area. I didnt have a pot to piss in until my early 20's and even then, when I thought I was doing it, I really wasnt looking back on it now, but I had a lot of fun back then and did what I had to do. I paid my way through school bartending and serving in a fine dining restaurant. My eyes were always drawn to the people that came in with nice watches on or drove nice cars, dressed well etc. To me it was the ultimate status symbol of making it and I can still remember the day I bought my first big boy watch.

Looking back on it now, none of that stuff matters. But I was just a kid and my priorities werent where they should have been, but that love of watches and always being drawn to them stayed with me.

Very few of my close acquaintances are into mechanical watches and I probably spend more time talking watches with reps and clients who either notice my watch or I notice theirs. It's helped me break the ice many a time.

But long story short, it's a combination of that. It's also partly the ability to purchase these pieces when given the opportunity. To me, it would be foolish to give a list to my AD and then not pull the trigger when the call is made that something on my list is available to me.

I wouldnt say that I am one to jump onto the hype train and I am not one that only wants these pieces because of the perceived exclusivity. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't aware of these things. Just like you said, "I guess its stupid to say no to free money", they are good buys. By no means am I looking at these as investment pieces, but lets be real. If shit ever hit the fan, I would be ahead if I had to get rid of them.

Ultimately, I bought two different GMT's with different Bezel inserts because I liked/wanted them and was given the opportunity to purchase them at list price.

Basically when the whale called back and was told he missed out, he was pissed at the world and started threatening to take his business elsewhere. The AD was trying to appease the whale and see if I would pass so that they would not potentially lose in their eyes, a more important customer than me.
Love it! Congrats!!

Quality over quantity is a good thing. Congrats again. Enjoy them all.
