When someone asks how tall you are do you give them your height with shoes on or barefoot?

I must travel in different circles, can't recall ever being asked this question outside of a medical setting. I would only assume if someone wanted to know how tall I was while wearing shoes this would be specified in the question.

I don't think anyone would ever want to know how tall you were wearing footwear, would they? The question "Height" has always meant in bare feet and to the top of your head, not your hair. Any variation from this makes the question meaningless surely.

I am taller, 6'6", so I get asked how tall I am on occasion. Most people that hedge on how tall they are are shorter. Don't take an inch away from them as it is important to most.
