FP Journe Elegante for Patek 5212a, 5205g or 5172g

I have. 2016 FP Journe Elegante 48 that I am thinking of trading for a Patek. I have 3 options….a 5212a with U$2k my way, a 5205g +3k from me or a 5172g (blue) +20k from me. Any advise or thoughts on the matter? As background, I do not have a Patek yet but I have another Journe (platinum chrnometre souvereign with blue mother of pearl dial), as we as an AP, numerous Rolexes, Omegas and other watches.

Should I pull the trigger? And for which Patek? Thanks

5212a or 5172g, depending on whether you want to go for manual chronograph. I personally go for 5212a. I find that 5172g is not so beautiful compared to the previous generations.

I assume this is all secondary market?

I have the 5212 and 5205g and really enjoy them. I much prefer the previous generation to the current 5172g, but still a nice piece nonetheless.

The answer is, there is really no wrong answer here. They are all great pieces. It really comes down to what sings to you most without taking $ into consideration. As for whether you should pull the trigger or not? If it was me, I would as I much prefer your CS over the Elegante.

The CS is a keeper for sure. I do not have a Petek yet that is why I am thinking of trading the Elegante for one. Yes, secondary market will be the source.

I am actually leaning towards either of these two as it makes more sense financially. Which do you prefer between the 5212 and 5205g and why? Thanks

Gosh, that's a tough one.

I just got the 5212 and still in the honeymoon phase. In the process of ordering different straps to play with the look. It's a strap monster and I can see myself reigniting the enjoyment every time I change the strap.

I've had the 5205g for a year now. I really enjoy it as the blue gradient dial is stunning in the sun. Watch can be easily worn with a suit or jeans/t-shirt. It's really versatile.

If I had to choose as my only Patek, I think I would lean towards the 5205g. It's more traditional Patek IMO.

Very well said and I agree. I am confused. I initially preferred the 5205g but the 5212 has benn growing an me as I realize what a strap monster it is. Anyway, these are all first world problems so no complaints at all. Whatever I finally decide will be good.

Good news is, you can't go wrong with either. Good luck on your decision and do share with some pics.

I've been eyeing the Elegante 48 as my next piece.
What do you think of the watch?

The 5205 is underrated but I would personally spring for the 5172g.

None of the 3 Patek options are among my personal favorites.

The 5212 has grown on me but I am afraid I'll always find it a little gimmicky with that font and "complication" with no less than 5 central hands.

Not interested in 5205 or 5172 as I don't find either particularly attractive. The 5205 dial design with its asymmetric cutouts and fonts and those hollow lugs are not for me. I'd stretch to a classic 3940 for a calendar complication or get a WT instead (any 5110 or 5230P). Also much prefer 5170G white and 5170P over 5172 in terms of dial and case design, the pushers, as well as size (not a fan of those numbers and the fancy lugs).

5205 for me. Beautiful case design, great dial layout and a lot of complication for your buck with both the annual calendar and the moonphase.

All of those trade options are better than three elegante 48, imo. I'm biased , though, as my elegante was a mess, stopping and not restarting with movement... This has been a problem with the reference for years. Good luck getting it fixed in under 9 mos. I teased mine even up for a pp 5524 new and pocketed money on top of that... The quality between the 2 is not even close.

My Elegante has been great with no problems at all. And it is my first Journe. Then I got my platinum CS. And since I do not have amPatek, that is my next goal but I want one with minimal or no cash outlay. The Elegante is a great watch in my opinion.

the 5205g or r would be my choice. The case design is elegant and sporty while the sunburst dial is sublime.

Go for the 5205 in either white or rose gold. Patek invented the annual calendar, so it's definitely the one to have.

I would do the 5205 in a second, the elegante is interesting but has nowhere to go but down when it comes to value. Also, even though is a "revolutionary" quartz caliber, it's still quartz. No Thank you.

I have both the elegante 48 and the 5212 and both are amazing !

I wouldn't go for the chrono or 5205 and that's my personal taste

The are both lovely pieces, congrats!

I think that leaves the door open for the 5170 in future. I prefer that gen for manual wound chrono, slightly smaller too.

5205g, for sure. It’s almost a wash on a cash basis, let go of the Journe while the brand is hot and before it needs a battery replacement
