New 5164r vs preowned 5164a & 5227

Quick background:

Bought a new 5164r. My 18month old monster (i still love him, he is still the second person i love most after my wife) then dropped it and now it has dents, scuffs and scratches.

Long story short the grey dealer agreed to take it back at a discount of course. I haven't decided but in the dealer, they had 5164a and 5227r which are two watches that i've been eyeing.

I can sell back the 5164r and get 5164a and 5227r (preowned) and need to top up around usd10k. A move im really contemplating.

What do you think

1. keep the 5164r and try to fix it
2. sell the 5164r and top up 10k to get 5164a and 5227r

I do like option 2.

Surprised your son comes after your wife now, evolution should be more powerful than clumsiness.

100% yes

Aside from the fact that 1. I think the 5164a looks better than the 5164r and 2. You would have two watches instead of one

This is the second posting you've made concerning this. Should probably face reality that this is something, which obviously bothers you, and will probably only intensify. Make the flip and no longer be concerned over the issue. Not sure of your other collection, but those two watches alone could cover you in practically all situations (sport/dress).

I think that’s a great trade and I’d do it, you get a good balance of sport and dress and I’ve always preferred Patek sports models in SS.

Good luck and sorry to hear that story, I have an 18 month old right now as well and learning daily the destruction he’s capable of

Given your aversion to scuffs and scratches, I think gold isn't for you. The 5164a will scratch and scuff but because it is SS versus gold, far less than the the 5164r. Just be careful with the Calatrava since that is precious metal too.

I read your other post regarding the Toddler. You should be lucky, it could have been FAR worse. Toddler are known for grabbing stuff and sometimes they may decides to bang it on something like a drum ;/

Option 2 - simple.

And your toddler should be no.1 - your wife will understand

You were born with a heart for a reason beyond its basic function; it's there to be followed. Which by the way, is also why option 2 is the right answer, because truthfully it's what you want

I think you did good, I recently let go my 5164R and I am telling you that 10k extra deal is good. The dealer will probably send the watch to Patek or LA Watchworks, They will fix it for $200-$300 and sell it. Both parties win, and you don't want it back , that gold bezel is beautiful but you can easily scratch it yourself if you are not careful enough.

So enjoy and congrats

Thats an awesome piece sir! Did you engrave it?

i plan to keep 5227 (if i end up buying one) long term and pass it down to my son sometime. But because its preowned, the Cert has someone else's name on it, which really bothers me.

Buying a new one will cost me a bomb.

Decisions decisions

I think the whole ‘somebody else’s name on the certificate’ thing is entirely blown out of proportion. How many times in your life will you ever pull out that certificate and look at it? Not to mention, never buying a watch on the 2nd hand market 1. Prevents you from getting some really good deals and 2. Prevents you from buying discontinued pieces that you thoroughly enjoy.

Haha yes sir. I agree. Just need to get pass by it.

I think when I eventually pass it to my Son. I’m just going to pass him the watch and not the papers :)

precisely. also the 5227 is terribly overpriced. i was lucky to get a 3 year old vault-dweller model, which already shed 12K USD from the original price tag and would never buy for full retail.

You should, maybe on his 18th birthday or thereabouts... and just as you're handing it to him, drop it on the floor and say, "Now we're even, ***hole."

Thoughts guys?
The AD had both white and black dial for 5205. I think the black dial is too flashy

5205 Black
5227 Black
5227 cream
