My "new" 1967 5513 from orig owner, worn in combat

I'm a new member here... mor eof a lurker but I wanted to share my latest acquisition -

1967 5513; 1.64 mill: I acquired the watch from the original owner, a special forces Marine (Force Recon) from 1951-1971. He purchased the watch new at NAS Atsugi in 1968, where by coincidence I was born 7 years prior (my Dad was a career naval aviator... carrier-based attack pilot from 1949-75). The watch was worn on combat missions, air-based insertions, and even when the marine was inserted via a submarine torpedo tube! Years later when sailing around the world on a small sailboat some thugs in Africa mistook him for an elderly tourist (he was in his 60s) and attempted to steal the watch. In his ever so understated way of talking he merely said "they didn't get the watch"!

The 5513 retains its original faded dial (nice brown patina which I was not really able to capture due to my poor photography skills), patina-ed hands, and bezel insert. It also still fitted with its original old style superdome (must have been replaced at some point). He had it serviced several times; in each case sending it all the way to Switzerland for the work.

In any event, I am proud to wear this watch now and every time I look down at it, I think of all the stories this watch could tell :o)

Yea, wow. That kind of provenance would send shivers down my spine every time I put it on.
It sounds like you still have some contact with the man, and if so, I'd take notes and get some more stories and put it all in a diary to keep with the watch.

IMO, knowing the history of a watch is more important than the box and docs... especially when the story is this significant. Great find!

My 1603 DJ is that way.

It was purchased by a LTC at a PX in Vietnam.

Wish mine could talk, too.

Very Cool!

Our DRSD MKll was purchased by a US Marine in the 60s who eventually landed in commercial diving.

Ya gotta love the provenance that comes with some of these vintage pieces.

Now that is a great story behind a watch. Something extra special about having one from a combat Veteran too. At least there is to me.

Thanks for sharing your story Pal, and welcome to TRF.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I have been wearing it almost everyday and love it! I just installed a new 93150/580 and it even feels better! I am on a passive lookout for the correct 7206 but I like the security of the heavier bracelet.

Congrats Roger. I would have loved to buy your other 5513 if you had not jacked the price up.

Cool history on the one you have now though.

Wow! What a classic! Just Like Roger Moore's Sub in "Live and Let Die" and "The Man with the Golden Gun"... Wait... Your name is Roger Moore too! You wouldn't happen to be that Roger Moore? I'm a big fan of him!

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. This one is a keeper for sure! I like to wear all my watches and even at 42 years old this one can be worn every day! Gotta love the bullet proof 5513!

LowFlight: Re the Maxi 5513... it sold on the first day with multiple full price offers; I gave you first opportunity before it was listed on the forums and you declined... I guess others didn't think the price was too high. Thanks for the nice comments on the my "new" meters first though

Very cool. As if the watch wasn't fascinating on its' own, the stories that go with it send it to a whole new level. Fantastic.
