Rolex Datejust TT 18K
So....I'm between a rock and a hard place here, I know. I'm debating going with either a mint 1985 Datejust 36MM two tone that looks like it might've been worn twice (read: NO horizontal sag on bracelet) for $4750CDN or sucking it up and going brand new. Canadian retail is $12,500. The new ones have solid gold links, wear a little nicer on the wrist, and have the concealed clasp and gold throughout which is a nicer look, but the 30 year old model is basically a third of the price.
Any thoughts? And I must reiterate that the 1985 watch looks like it spent most of its life in a drawer. (no box, no papers, but full compliment of links...even though I need to take out 4 of them) |

To me, the biggest detail is missing... Who is the seller of the older watch and do you trust them? no box, papers, service may be needed, etc... go with the new, if you can swing it

I'd keep looking, I paid 2k less than your looking at for the same watch with box and everything. To me that's a premium for a watch that old no matter the condition. Mine has near zero stretch.

I would check out the for sale section here and go with a trusted seller. Always see some great TT DJ for good prices.

Look at a used newer model? TTs seem to depreciate at a much quicker and larger percentage than SS Sports models

I might suggest a third option...look for something in between a 30 year old watch and a BNIB. Let someone else take the depreciation for it, but new enough to give you what you want, i.e., the crown clasp and SEL. Good luck,

I am a n Canada too, and that's too much for an old watch! There should be lots of choices in the post 2000 age. I avoid buying new and try to find ones that are no more than 5 years old if possible they tend to be in mint condition. Worst of the depreciation has happened. My thoughts!

The only thing that was making me reconsider going new is the solid gold centre links. On the old watch, they look great right now, but I wonder how long it would take in order for that to change... |

for me, definitely the pre-owned DJ. i much prefer the thinner and brushed lugs of the previous generation DJ.

This is my 37 year old 16014. Bracelet is about 75% and holding strong. I think if your 1985 version is like new your going to get 20 plus years out of the bracelet. Mine is about + 1 second a day so no issues with the 3035 movement. Good luck.
