"Dilemma" Lange 1815 Chronograph or IWC Portugieser and Royal Oak 15202

Dear forum members,

I enjoyed reading a lot of your threads, but hardy participated. As I am currently stuck in a "dilemma" to choose between some very beautiful watches, I thought I might start and ask the community :-)

I just sold an AP Royal Oak Chrono (26320ST), as it was a bit too big and flashy for my taste. Also I thought that the chrono function was making the watch too sporty for more formal attires and on the other hand the polished bracelet seemed for me too dressy for casual wear.

Initially I planned to get the Royal Oak Jumbo (15202ST) instead, but I just realized that the Lange und Söhne 1815 Chronograph with the incredibly beautiful movement is not as expensive as I thought. I know, two total different watches entirely.

I order to fund the 1815 Chronograph I would sell my IWC Portugieser Automatic (500705) as both watches have a similar look. Also the Portugieser is my only more formal watch in my collection. To round my explanation up, I also own the PP Aquanaut Travel Time (5164), which I put somehow in the same category as the Royal Oak, at least in terms of a casual wearer. All my other watches are tool watches.

So what would you do? Get the 1815 Chronograph and replace the Portugieser or get the Royal Oak 15202? - what a nice problem to have LOL

No comparison between the ALS and the IWC. If you can swing the ALS then I say go for it.

The only negative comment I have on that watch is that the pulsation dial is far more interesting than the regular dial. The regular dial, which I believe is no longer being produced, is just very flat and sterile.

ALS for sure but I also find them a bit sterile. Now if we were talking about the boutique edition!

The 15202 you will find just as flashy as the ROC you just sold.

Get the Lange and don-t look back.

You get my preference

It is SO worth it just to look at the movement. A friend who has a Datograph sighs every time he sees it and second guesses himself as to which is the nicer of the two...

1815

1815 by a mile. It's my favorite watch - I happen to like the 'sterility' of the regular production 1815, but I must admit that I also love the boutique edition as well.

When I was in Dresden in early January (great city btw) I stopped by the Lange boutique and tried on the 1815 Boutique chrono.

It's an absolute stunner. Photos don't do it justice - in photos the hands looks silver, while IRL they're black polished, so they pickup light, with the effect not looking as 'washed out' as the press photos.

Also, the dimensions of the 1815 Chrono are perfect for me - a real old school style, understated chrono with unparalleled (IMHO) movement chops - the jumping minute and flyback functions add a touch of 'geek' that I appreciate.

I have posted some photos below; they're terrible quality from my mobile phone, but hopefully they give you a better idea.

one more comment

As you already have the 5164 (great watch btw), I would say that the 1815 chrono would be the perfect compliment - those two watches very well could be one of the best two watch 'collections' available.

Thank you very much for your comments. Very helpful! Seeing all the love for the ALS and the great pictures - also the rightful comment that the 15202 is probably still too flashy for me - I will go with the beautiful 1815 Chrono. Now I have to go on the hunt. :) Thanks again, what a great Forum!

Seems everyone here is on the same page re the 1815, all the love is for either the original iteration or what was formerly the boutique edition and no seems to the the only version available.

And if you search a little you'll see a beautiful rose gold version with a black dial.

Lange or a used 5170. I also heard the boutique version will be discontinued soon too.

Typical, just I'm getting closer with my fund allocation for an 1815 chrono Lange decide to discontinue it.

Hopefully, they bring it back next year in a version like the boutique model (pulsation scale) but with black printing on the dial and all blued-steel hands. That would be the ultimate for me and I'd even be willing to cull some of the herd to quickly get the residual cash together for that one.

1815 chrono boutique edition is by far my favorite version of the 1815 chrono. Enjoy the hunt!

Agreed. One issue with the royal oak for me is that it doesn't dress down particularly well

I love my 1815 chrono, I agree that the pulsation dial models are by far better looking than those without.
