Service before warranty runs out?

My BLNR’s warranty runs out October this year. Should I service it just before in the hope if something is wrong they’ll fix it? Has anyone done this?

RSC isnt going to service it for free just because its in the warranty period unless something is wrong with the watch.

You cant just use the warranty to get a free service.

basically you pay for the service and if a $20 part is worn out then you save $20. Its an expensive way to save a twenty though

I don’t suppose it would hurt especially if RSC find a fault that would be covered under warranty. Obviously the cost of the service wouldn’t be free but any warranty repairs would be. Might consider this myself before my warranty ends next year

Warranty is only if you have a fault with your watch and not a free service, if there is nothing wrong with your watch you will pay to have it serviced its that simple.

I remember reading a post on here years ago where someone sent their watch to RSC for “inspection” just before their warranty ended, even though they weren’t having any problems. The RSC ended up replacing/servicing a fair amount of parts under warranty if I remember correctly.

If the watch is running well just sit tight. No reason to make a problem where there is not one.

I agree. The parts themselves are fairly stout. If the watch is running fine now, it will likely be running fine in 5 more years when you might consider its first overhaul.

Fiddling fingers, no matter how skilled, are the bane of watchworks. Even the RSC can fiddle around and mark a dial, or nick a bezel or case or clasp. So I’d reduce exposure to extra service work whenever possible.

Is a five year warranty not generous enough?

Funny that there was a post this week where people were questioning Rolex’s justification to invalidate a warranty when the watch has received a knock - clearly accidental damage. And now we have the complete opposite where a ‘free service under warranty just in case’ is being floated as a good idea.

If you need to save the £500 on a service that is due once every 5-10 years I’d be looking at owning cheaper watches.

The OP wasn’t expecting a free overhaul by RSC. What he was thinking - and asking for constructive ideas - is if the RSC found a faulty component, that part alone would be replaced free of charge.

He did get some good pointers about the idea...

I suppose it could be read that way. But the OP has been here long enough to know he has to pay RSC for the overhaul. The part about fixing something wrong is where I believe he meant the warranty would kick in.

I’m being generous in my view of his post and it’s better for me to wait until he responds.

Personally, unless something is preventing the watch from properly functioning, I would leave it alone. Not worth the hassle.

Leave it alone if it runs fine, service as some kind of preventive maintenance makes no sense other than for Rolex profits.

I think this plan only pays off if something big is found wrong. Kind of like hoping to enjoy the benefits of your life insurance policy.

I do not believe that if you send it in for a service before warranty end, and they find something wrong, that would qualify as a warranty issue.

Worn or damaged parts are always just that, not manufacturing defects.

Personally, if it is running fine at 5 years, why service at all. That could be an expensive "maybe", and likely 5 years too soon.
