"Custom" dials?

Newbie here.

I see several Rolexes with "custom" dials for sale on the Internet...

I've come to know that in many cases, this means refurbished and embellished original dials, but my question is how much does this affect values of the watch? Is this one of those "to each their own" type of deals? I know that to the "purists" a refinished dial is probably a cardinal sin, but I'm interested in what you professionals think of the matter.

This is a place of authenticity, and as a result, not many will encourage you to even consider a non Rolex dial, bezel, etc... Maybe elaborate on what you are considering?

And welcome to TRF..

Most of the offers on vintage rolexes offered on eBay etc. feature refurbished "custom" dials. I too like a more authentic version, but is adding diamonds or other embellishments significantly detrimental to resale value? I am considering a Tahitian MOP diamond dial for DJ 16014 because I like he look, and it freshens the watch somewhat.

Not having original parts does make it more difficult to sell. It's sort of like having a car with a body kit and chrome rims. "To each their own," yes, but not everyone on the market for that car is going to prefer to purchase that customized car while there are many other original options on the market.

This is kind of how I saw it. The boss (wife) has allocated a budget for me to enhance my 16014... What would a reasonable rate be to service and replace dial?

There are some guys that can answer that question better than I can. I think you might do well calling your nearby RSC to get a more definitivr answer, since different movements and services have different costs.

"Custom" dials?

If you're talking ladies watches, i.e. Date justs...many have aftermarket dials and bezels. The secondary market isn't too dynamic for these watches - at least on the classifieds here.

You could always revert to stock at a couple of hundred dollars or more - provided you have the original parts.

I'd steer clear of bedazzling...but that's me.
