Thoughts on the Rolex S/S shortage

I have owned many Rolex’s over the last 25 years. 1665, 16660, 65713 16613, 116600, and a 216750. I have never had to wait more than a few weeks if the AD didn’t have it in stock. Now fortunately. I’ve always lived in major US cities, and I am sure that has something to do with it. While I haven’t seen many sport models in AD.s this past year, but when I call my AD around Christmas, and told her I wanted a SD43, she had one for me within a month. Unfortunately, I had to pass at the time, but just got a call yesterday that she had a SD43, a Deep Blue, and a Root Beer GMT II. Needless to say I’m picking up the SD43 Wednesday.

I believe the key to success with AD’s is prior business dealing. Hope folks have better luck than what I have been reading on the forum. I’ll post a picture once I pick it up.

Best wishes.

I think you are onpoint. The relationship is a huge factor. But at the same time, for many new entrants, it turns into a chicken and egg thing. One should not have to buy something they do not want in order to buy other pieces.

Congratulations! Also a wonderful timepiece.

I think it is difficult to establish a relationship if you only like one SS Rolex that happens to be popular and desirable.

Yeah just like the saying, Money makes Money! But it's kinda hard for people with very little money.

I walked into an AD I had never visited before and asked to order a Submariner. Put down 50%. They told me it could be well over a year. I said “that’s fine”. 6 months later I had it on my wrist.

Geographic location certainly plays a factor. But so does persistance and patience. I don’t buy the “building a relationship” so much. I also would never support the grey market or resellers who charge thousands over retail. This whole “need it now” mentality is ridiculous.

An AD I never have business with I went into the store. He looked at me and asked if I was local (implying I'm a foreigner) then he said point blank you need to buy a DJ to be on the SS sports model waiting list. Then I said "do I know where I stand on the waiting list" and he said "no. Not disclosed." That put me way off doing any transaction let alone building a relationship with this AD.

Congrats! For old timers like us who have been buying from AD, it isn't too bad but for newcomers or guys who have been buying off TS and have no history with AD, this doesn't look too good for them.

The first AD experience can be a little, um, off putting if you are not prepared for it. I wasn't. Hadn't been on TRF yet. I had decided I wanted a Rolex, probably a sub or something from the that family. GF was supportive and we decided to visit the local AD in a very upscale part of CA. Both her parents had Rolexes and she was saying I really needed to see it on my wrist to make a final decision. That made sense. I was imagining a place with some new and pre-owned models, a wide selection... You know, like shopping for nearly anything else. Like a nice car. Like the internet but where you could actually have the in-person buying experience. We would dress up a bit, choose a watch then go out afterwards and celebrate. Make it a fun day. We had poked around the internet, looked at models and so on. Let's go shopping! I called my cc company and let them know I might be making a large purchase at a jewelry store.

THAT was an eye opener. Of course I ended up buying somewhere else because I couldn't there. But I will still stop in and look.
