New Member w/5513
Hello all. Just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Jim and I'm from the Midwest. I actually just discovered this forum when searching for information about my Submariner 5513. I didn't know that there was such a wealth of information available!
Initially I was looking for why my watch was exhibiting some interesting behavior. I seemed to be able to detect chattering or vibrating during movement of my wrist. Currently the watch is at the RSC in NYC, courtesey of my local Rolex store. From what I've read here, it may be a rotor lacking lubrication and/or a lot of wear. The rotor was replaced once around 1988 and I've had a short list of issues with it that I'll get into in another post. I've had this watch since 1987. It was a graduation gift from my parents. I wear it every day...it's no safe queen. I don't know how old the watch is as it was used at the time it was given to me. I actually can't wait until I get it back from the RSC to look at the serial number and correctly determine it's age! I can't even recall if it's a meters-first on the dial...how sad is that? I'm also curious to find out about the bracelet. It's not riveted but the links appear to be much thinner and lighter than the newer Subs. The steel in the links appear to be folded and not solid. My watch also has the locking hasp over the clasp. Do the members here think that it's the original bracelet? I'll have to get all of the numbers off of my watch upon it's return to get more information I suppose. Oh, I have also considered getting a Zulu or NATO strap. Which width would I need for my watch? Would I use the existing pins? Any recommendations on where to purchase one? Thanks agian to everyone for all of your contributions! I thoroughly enjoy reading about these great watches. |

Welcome.
Your watch takes 20mm straps. There are heaps around.......just depends on what strikes your fancy

Welcome to TRF.
The lugs on a Sub are 20 mm apart, this is the size you need to look for when getting a Nato strap. It's sounds like the bracelet is probably a Rolex bracelet, whether or not it is the original bracelet and so on would be easier to determine once you can post PICs and you have determined what the actual serial number of the watch is.

Welcome to TRF and from the sound of things you have a great watch...as for straps just Google Nato Straps or Zulu Straps for sources!!!

Thank you for the warm welcomes as well as the info on the bands!
George, your watch looks a lot like mine. I'm anxiously awaiting it's return from the RSC! As soon as it's back, I'll be sure to post pictures! If this isn't the correct forum to ask, please let me know, but I just heard back from my jeweler regarding the disposition of my watch. I'd like to get the boards' consensus on some of the recommendations: 1. Full service (of course) Additional recommendations: 1. New bracelet. 2. New dial. 3. New hands. As I stated above, I don't know a whole lot about my watch but I believe the dial, hands and bracelet to be original and authentic to the period the watch was produced. The bracelet seems a bit on the loose side but I don't think I'll loose the watch. Would the replacement bracelet likely be the thicker variety found on new Subs? My dial and hands look exactly like George's watch above. Mine has the "Swiss - T < 25" and the dial is very clean. The luminous markers are all quite bright at night, as are the hands. My hands are shiny too with no patina. I believe Rolex refinished the face and hands last time it was in for service (2008). The dial was even refinished at that time as well...when I sent it in, it was quite scratched but when it was returned it looked new. At any rate, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to decline the additional services but thought I'd run it by you folks first. Any information is appreciated. Moderators, if this isn't an appropriate place to ask, please have mercy on my noob status and move this post. Thank you all! |

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! I'll order a NATO strap sometime today thanks to dddrees for the strap measurement.
I just spoke to my AD and declined all of the additional recommendations. The RSC told them that the bracelet was very worn, but I'll keep it original. Apparently Rolex swaps them? The cost quoted to me was $975 for a new Oyster fliplock replacement. From what my AD told me, my watch is a 5513/0 and the serial is 417XXXX. Can someone tell me the approximate date of manufacture? Thank you! Pictures (I promise!) in a couple of weeks! |
