18Kt Datejust bezel content
Hello all,
I've just become the proud owner of my first Rolex a 16013 datejust made in ~1978. The watch was advertised as being stainless with an 18Kt gold bezel, markers, and crown. I analyzed the gold content and found the bezel to be 63%, the markers to be 63%, and the crown to be 75%. The crown sounds about right as it's a signed Rolex crown but what do you guys make of the bezel and markers? Is Rolex sourced 18Kt gold typically right at 75%? 63% seems a bit low and closer to 14Kt. Thanks in advance! |

Welcome to TRF! Datejusts were made with 14kt gold back then. My first DJ was also a TT 14kt as well. Congrats and enjoy it!

Thank you Sir. That's interesting information. I wonder what the story is with the crown?? I'm guessing it had been replaced at some point. I've been reading the forum for some time now in an attempt to become Rolex literate. Amazing amount of information around here!! |

I believe that the crowns and tubes are routinely replaced at service.

The DJ with acrylic crystals are 14k which include the 1603, and 16030, the ones that came after with sapphire crystals are 18k.

Thanks guys. This sounds like a replacement during servicing. Probably good news. Here's a couple wrist shots.

This is incorrect. The 16030 was strictly a stainless steel watch with no gold case elements. If the OP's is a 16030 with gold, then these bits are upgrades, essentially transforming his 16030 into a 16013 two-tone.
