new s/s submariner
Hi guys. I've been reading this great forum for a while and just ordered my first Rolex. I was hoping you guys could help me put my mind at ease. I went into a very large ad in ny to purchase a s/s sub with the black dial. The salesman told me that it was hard to get shipments because of an expected price increase on March 1st but he could special order one for me. I took him at his word and left a 1000 deposit. He said it would arrive in 10 days and if there was a price increase I was still guaranteed the 8000 price. Does special ordering a stock item sound right? Do you guys think I truly am covered if there is a price increase? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Ah...ye olde price increase.
Typical watch, car, boat dealer technique. Whatever he does not have in stock is a "special order." ;-) |

Yea guys I was skeptical about the price increase routine myself. I'm okay with that though cause I went in there with the intention of buying it anyway. I just hope that it does come in the 10 days that he promised and that there are no surprises especially when I could have went to a different ad and walked out with one right away.

Well yea, the old price increase is a trick used by many salespeople. However, it could be very likely that rolex does increase their prices in March. It is definately possible. Rolex always do price increases and has been increasing at an almost constant rate. Anyways, did you agree on $8k + tax for the watch??

Sometimes AD's will run out of varuious models, this is not uncommon. Did you get a receipt stating the terms you verbally agreed to?

x2. There must have been some kind of signed papers that confirm to your agreement. One lesson ive learnt is you can trust anyone unless you have a WRITTEN statement on it. Its all about what you have on paper!

As long as you want it and you placed you're order you should be ok and good to go for $8k regardless of what goes on in the market.
cheers and nine more days to go

From what I understand, you don't see much if any discounting on the watch you describe. And, at least my AD tells me this, Rolex shuts or slows down production for awhile at the turn of the year, so it can take awhile to get a watch ordered in January or February. Other than the price increase, which is reasonably good speculation, I think your AD was being completely upfront.

I did agree on the full 8000 plus tax cause this was the 3rd ad that would not consider a discount. I did not get the 10 day in writing but I do have the receipt describing the model ordered along with the 8000 price + tax, minus my 1000 deposit that I charged to my credit card.

IMOH, the price increase story is a tactic the AD uses to entice you to purchase sooner than later because you do not want to be a product of higher prices later. The other story they peddle is "difficult inventory to procure" or "high demand product", so that you will "special order" from them and again be enticed to purchase the product.
I'm sure that whatever price you agreed upon when ordering the product will be honored. They just applied standard sales tactics on you to make the sale. BTW, congrats on pulling the trigger on what (in my opinion) is Rolex's most iconic watch in their collection!

Maybe it's a sales tactic, but many AD's are out of stock on this model and Rolex seems to be holding up shipments. This is typically done right before they issue an increase. Time will tell!

Rolex doesn't announce price increases to AD's ahead of time... Still, you don't see a discount on the Sub Date very often..
I'm surprised at the 10 days though.. the main Distributor is in NY, and so it's just a truck ride over to the shop.......

You can get that same watch right here for less and no tax, but if you want it brand new, there's nothing wrong with that. Good luck - it's a terrific watch!

Congrats, I cannot wait to see some pics. As for the price and discounting this is going to be based on your specific relationship with the AD... Number of watches/items purchased there and money spent.
That being said I think if you have everything in writing as you say you will be just fine! Dont forget to show us some pics when she arrives

Congrats, nice watch. You can always find it somewhere cheaper, used, grey, whatever. So don't even worry about it. You got a decent price and an outstanding watch. Be proud of that!

One day the price increase will come true, only it won`t be when the saleperson told you it will happen,it will be many months from now or perhaps more than a year from now.
Have fun with your new Submariner. |

Cause its a birthday present that's over a month away so I figured its no rush. Also this may sound silly but I kind of liked the idea of a fresh one right out of the box from Rolex rather than the display model in the showroom.

You will enjoy it and the anticipation will make the SubC much more worthwhile once it arrives.
