Question about 1966 Tudor Sub
Folks, I've been looking for a 1966 birthdate watch and have been spying one on the bay for quite some time. It looks to be in good condition and comes with a replacement bezel and probably replacement hands too (since they don't match the patina of the original hour markers). I'm not exactly sure what the rules are on valuation here, so I'm trying to tread lightly. I guess my question is this: How would the value of a vintage Tudor sub DECREASE without the original bezel and hands?
Do I make any sense? I'm just trying to understand the difference in value from ALL ORIGINAL vs MOSTLY ORIGINAL. I personally don't care if the watch is entirely original since it's still a 66 regardless, but I also understand that 100% original carries a premium in the collectible market and I want to make a smart purchase whether it's this vintage watch or another. Any input is appreciated and a photo of the Sub from the bay is attached. Thanks in advance for any input. Best, TRF member, Explorer II owner, and future Rolex/Tudor vintage owner! |

Obviously more photos would help ;)
Insert is as you stated - from a sapphire sub. Dial looks OK, case looks legit. Hands were replaced and a 66 IMO should have a big bubble sweep - which is proper for these. In a nut shell, ones with the correct bits come along all of the time so maintaining a fair budget and a good search is often worth waiting for.

I get it, but this one has been hanging around for a LONG TIME, so a competitive offer is worth making. Not having the original bezel and hands don't really bother me. In fact, if I had the original and they were in really bad shape, I would replace them and KEEP the original parts since I like my vintage watches looking good. Still I'd keep the original parts to maintain originality and value.
So are the original bezel and hands worth $1000? I'm no expert, but I own a few vintage watches and this looks to be in decent condition for a 50 year old watch. I see these on the bay and at Chrono24 going from $4000-$9000 or more (of course, some of these are ridiculously high asking prices) and many with the original bracelet, so I'm wondering if this watch without a bracelet is worth $3k with the replacement parts. Is it worth making the offer? All I'd need is a sweet strap and I'd be good-2-go. A few more pics from the bay attached. |

Be careful with a flawed Tudor Sub .....
If the seller will bend on the price and all else stacks up, the eBay watch may be worth considering. As long as it's a keeper ....
I say that cos. flawed Subs can be difficult to sell, just like the eBay seller is finding out. And after a while, those flaws may start to bug you. Inserts are easy enough to get - getting expensive though - but hands for vintage Tudor Subs can be a devil to find. And matching a handset to an existing dial is just soooo difficult. I have a totally correct 507xxx serial 7928 available. I'll need to check the case back but I'm thinking '66 sounds correct. Mine is a chapter ring dial too so sexier than the eBay watch. Drop me a PM if interested |
