Help with 1016, please.
My Grandfather wore what I now know to be a 1016. I was with him when he bought it about 68/9 and I remember him telling me about the accuracy testing (COSC). He wore his on a Jubilee rather than an Oyster. By the time I developed an interest in watches he had died and I have no idea what happened to the watch. My Grandmother only died last year and she didn't have it. I have always liked the simplicity and versatility of the 1016 Explorer but they are usually ridiculously expensive.
I have seen this which looks interesting and sensibly priced. I assume it is a service dial but would be interested in the opinion of experts on this forum. http://www.dream-watches.co.uk/amazi...category_id=75 The RAF provenance probably doesn't add much but it interests me as Grandfather was in the air force. Any views would be appreciated. Thanks |

I am far from an expert. Just want to wish you well in your hunt. My grandfather was special to me and your story touched me. Again, good hunting.

If I was buying, and the original owner was willing to share his recollection, I'd ask for a rundown of service history and any mention of a dial replacement.

Thanks, Rebel.
Mine was special also. I was his only grandchild and I lived with my grandparents as a teenager so I was close to him. He had been a pilot with Bomber Command during the war but there were things he had done that I had no idea about until he died in 1998. I would have liked to heard more about his time during the war but he chose not to talk about it. I have most of his personal effects cufflinks, medals etc. so have plenty to remember him by. If the 1961 date is correct then the hands and dial have been replaced. The price reflects this as a period correct gilt dial and hands would be at least double the asking price. Otherwise it looks ok for the money.
