Help with the identification of Vintage Rolex.

Hello everyone. I am not a collector but recently I bought an old silver Rolex. According to the serial it is from 1938, but I do not know much more. I would like some help to identify model, caliber and other interesting things. It will need repair and restoration and I want to know if it is worth investing in repair and restoration.

Its a model 578 as listed on the case back. To give you an idea of value, Bonhams last year sold a 9k solid gold cased 578 which was in excellent cosmetic and running condition for $1400US which included premiums.
From the condition of yours, a restoration will most likely exceed the watches overall value.

Serial number charts refer to Oyster cased Rolexes, which this is not.
Appears to be from 1920's or possibly early 30's.
Silver hallmark is from Switzerland, so should not pre-date that.

Saving an old soldier is always worth the effort.

I think I'm going to sell it as it is. It has broken the balance shaft. It goes to ebay ...
