Sounds to me as though you prefer the Explorer II, so why even ask unless you're unsure? If you are undecided, don't buy anything until you've made up your mind.

ExII for a more low key work presence.

Much like you I also don't really like the polished centre links on the GMT BLNR but I would definitely buy it over the Explorer II. But like everyone says it comes down to what really makes you happy.

I myself would choose GMT II just for its shiny bracelet's sake.

Chaps
If I were only to have one watch, the choice would be the Explorer 2 simply because it is easier to live with. I have a 39mm Explorer and I just plain forget that it is on my wrist. I also have a Sub which admittedly is a bit more showy but it is a total PITA when wearing it with a cuffed shirt. I wore a double cuffed shirt with chain link cufflinks to provide as much free space as possible around my wrist but it kept catching on the cuffs all the time. I actually took the sub off and put it in my pocket after a few hours. So if the OP is going to wear the watch with cuffs, then avoid a bezel type watch at all costs. Regards Mick |

Rolex Explorer II or GMT Master II?
I have been wearing the ExpII for the past 8 days straight, the tool-ish nature of the design and brushed bracelet makes it the perfect, imo, low-key watch for anywhere and everywhere.
And it is less pricier than the GMTc, which makes it very good value for money. Btw I love both my GMTc and ExpII. |

I have a 1983 Submariner, then got a 2000 GMT Master II Coke bezel last summer, and most recetly I picked up a 1993 Polar Explorer II. But I wanted a more recent Rolex and I had to part with an old one to do it, so it was between the GMT Master II, Submariner Ceramic, or Explorer II (the Datejust was stolen 3 yr ago). My GMT Master II Coke was from the 1st year they had Superluminova and it's a classic, as well as my Sub which has the venerable 3035 movement and sapphire - both desirable years. So, it came down to the Exp II which looks smaller on my wrist because of the stainless bezel. A 42mm version was looking more attractive, and I didn't have to worry about polished center links. I liked wear the Explorer II a lot and wanted working lume for nightime use - but it just wasn't cost effective to fix the issue without throwing a lot of money at it, or de-valuing the watch if it was done by a third party like with my Sub. Although the Sub has a great quality re-lume it still took a hit in value, which allowed me to buy it for less. So, on Monday I upgraded to a new 216570 Polar Explorer II. Therefore, I voted Explorer II. |

I'd lean toward the GMT II but the explorer is slightly larger. Have you tried both of them on yet?

I would go Ex 2. If you see a Sub in your future, even more reason for one

I like aesthetics if exp2. Love the orange hand and size of case. Also not as polished and shiny
