Exp II or DJ II

Sorry for the "what should I do?" thread, but I'm admittedly a Rolex newb, and I'd just like some input from seasoned forum members. I currently have a 45mm orange bezel Planet Ocean 2500d, blue Omega ceramic seamaster professional, speedy pro, and cartier tank solo xl that I'm considering flipping. Looking to acquire a datejust ii fluted or an exp II 21570 in black or polar. I'm torn on which way to go right now, although truthfully I will ultimately own both.

I wear a blazer or suit to work most days, but I dress pretty casually otherwise.

I suppose the best question would be whether I should be looking at the DJ II or EXP II as my first Rolex?

Well based on what you've said then I'd say go with a Datejust as it's more likely to work both casual and smart, whereas the Explorer II is just casual and rugged and won't go with your workwear.

As I said, that's what I'd suggest for you based on your info, but me personally? I'd get a Explorer II as it's the watch I prefer.

I'd say a good mix between sport and dress, for your work and casual attire, might be the DJ II smooth bezel/stick dial. Truly goes with most anything.

I believe the DJII/DJ41 are both aggressive looking sporty dress watches and can go well with anything. The ExpII is a great watch but it is more of an adventurer's watch and not very dressy. It is a good stealth Rolex and provides a second time zone if that is what you want; it also has better lume if night time legibility is important. I personally like the more aggressive DJII over the more conservative DJ41 although the DJ41 has the newer designed movement with a longer reserve than the DJII is that is important to you. It seems you have plenty of watches that aren't dressy. I'd go for the DJ.

If you are looking for something you plan on wearing both at work with a suit and outside of work, then it's not the exp2

Thanks for the replies! I guess it will depend upon which watch(es) I keep, that will maybe sway my decision. Otherwise, I'm still totally up in the air.

Both brilliant watches. The current EXP II feels a bit large for everyday suit wearing folks, but I love the Polar. I would also consider a 36mm version for its classic proportions, in blue stick bezel simply delicious. Maybe that should come first for its versatility and the Explorer later for its outrageousness...

Speed. I am a 36 fan. DJ II is too big and in-proportionate IMO. So I tried on DJ 41 yesterday even though I thought it would be too big, as I follow procedure. I'm glad I did...

I was shocked to feel the size was actually OK. It didn't make sense. I was even more shocked when I saw a thread on WUS saying its size is actually 39.6mm, NOT 41mm! and yes this is excluding the crown Its distance between lugs is also 47mm vs DJ II's large 49mm. Something to consider, if you're interested.

I'm not ruling out the 36 yet, but I am considering the 41 for modern sensibilities

The 41 is actually 39.5mm if I recall correctly; my DJ2 is 41.2 as I measured it last night.

Based on what you have already, I'd go with a DJ. However, if I personally had your collection, I wouldn't go with either. I'd go for Sub Date LVc. Just my 2c/1.5p

Sigh, I think of all the opportunities missed, promotions denied because I wore an Explorer II with my suit .....

Try them both, buy what you like.

With the sport lineup that you have I would look at the DJ II. I own the Polar Explorer II and it is great and works both casual and with a suit. Go try them both on and you will know.

Given your current collection skews towards the sports line, I would definitely go with the Datejust

If you can handle the disproportion of the DJ2, go with it. If you can't,go with DJ.
