Now days some folks think that anything goes.. Untucked shirts and tennis shoes with their formal wear, as well as pie-tin watches..

Doesn't make it "proper".

This question has been asked so many times. The black tie etiquette is NO WATCH. NO SPORTS WATCH, NO DRESS WATCH. NO APPLE WATCH, NO GSHOCK.

But there are different kind of black tie events. If you go to Harvard club black tie, then please do not make a fool out of yourself and follow the black tie etiquette ( it is available on google and wikipedia ). If you are going to a Hollywood black tie party, then by all means, wear your watches, diamond necklaces, gold chains, Gucci sneakers and skull motif scarf.

I'm actually surprised the amount that wouldn't wear one with a Tuxedo. Maybe I still have more to learn as I don't know the proper "etiquette" for black tie events.

I, for one, have always thought the Submariner went perfect with a tuxedo, which is why I was dumbfounded by my friends perspective on it. I can see why he has that view now. I wore a Submariner 16800 (birth year) for some of my wedding and my grandfathers DD through some ceremonial stuff.

For tuxedo, 36mm or less. Preferably leather band (croc etc). Although all gold works. All stainless? NO WAY. Just don't wear a watch.

Can you wear a sub if you want? Sure. But you'll be on par with the guy who wears velvet pumps yet isn't the host...or that guy who went to Al's formal wear and got the tux with a purple vest instead of a black cummerbund.

I wouldn't do it. The reason not to do it has nothing to do with avoiding dirty looks. Nobody there will notice your watch or care. I love Subs way more than tuxedos but the two just don't go together. Much like rubber-soled shoes aren't appropriate dress shoes.

Can't wear it with a tux unless you're well under 30 and pretending to be James Bond. Emphasis on pretending

My sentiment as well. But hey, to each his own. If you like the Sub with a Tux then have at it. There is no right or wrong when it comes to personal style.

Your biggest problem is not about worrying if a Sub is appropriate or not to wear with a Tuxedo but to understand the concept of formal wear which you obviously do not.

Rule 1. When wearing formal attire, what you like or dislike does not count one little bit. Formal wear is a uniform right down to the length of your shoe laces. You wear what is expected and the rule of thumb is that everyone dresses the same.

Rule 2. There are varying levels of formality, ranging from no time pieces at all, followed by pocket watches and finally wrist watches.

Rule 3. A Tuxedo is the lowest form of formal wear, in fact one could say it is hardly formal at all but simply rather posh. As a rule of thumb, if the main event is before 6.00pm, a Sub will be ok but still rather infra dig. If the event is after 6.00pm, then the rule is a smallish and slim gold watch without complications and a shiny black strap.

Tuxedos are also worn on occasions where children are present and in this case the pre 6.00pm rule applies.

Regards

Mick

To be a dress watch it has to be on a leather strap (but obviously almost any watch can be put on leather). As for a tuxedo, no watch at all is the traditionally way to go, as it is considered rude to check the time at such events. So if you're interested in 'playing it safe,' then the answer is no - a sub can't be worn with a tux.

However...

If the sub is your best piece...or maybe even your only piece...or maybe you just want to feel like James Bond, then I would wear it because 90% of the dirty looks you will get will be jealous people who wish they had your watch. The other 10% will be a combination of traditionalist old men not wearing a watch and Calatrava-wearing gents who you can't really knock for their choices.

At the end of the day this is a highly debated topic amongst those who frequent black tie events and my best advice to your friend would be to get a feel for the crowd before the event and if it feels right, go for it. I know there's a tendency to show off, because let's face it if you have a nice sub date and your dress watch is a grand seiko, do you really want everyone thinking your best piece is a grand seiko? Maybe you don't care...again, depends on who you are. Nowadays this a very subjective matter that is really up to the person himself.
Drop the mic... perfect response

My opinion is no watch (no matter how dressy it is) works with a tuxedo and certainly not a sports watch on a metal bracelet. So ideally you shouldn't wear one at all.

From gentlemansgazette.com:

Wearing a dive watch with a tuxedo is far too casual for an evening out on the town.

A century ago one should never wear a wrist watch with a dinner jacket. The idea behind it was that your sole focus should be on the host and other guests, not on the time. Looking down at your watch was an indicator that you had another place to be. However, it’s safe to say that nowadays the traditional rule of not wearing your watch is now antiquated.

Evening Watch Etiquette :

If you do decide to wear a timepiece with your dinner jacket, we’ve put together a more modern list of rules to follow.

- Ensure that your watch is formal. If you would wear it to the beach, don’t wear it in the evening.

- If you don’t have the perfect evening watch, don’t wear one.

- If you must check the time, do so inconspicuously by excusing yourself and going to the restroom, or a quiet area of the establishment such as an empty hallway or even outside.

- Wear the watch on your left wrist so when you shake hands, it won’t be noticed as, your cuff rides up.

- Whenever possible, wear a pocket watch instead of a wristwatch.

- Make sure your watch has no audible alarms, tones or chimes. It should be silent and without any complications. Especially if you’re at a dinner, the theatre or an event where you’re part of an audience.

- Check the time as infrequently as possible being certain never to glance at your watch mid conversation.

I can't believe modern people care about nonsense "rules" made by snobs in another century.
The world is changing before our very eyes and people want to quote elitist rubbish about what sort of watch you can wear to appease the boring stuffed-shirts of the establishment.
Laughable.

Submariner and a Tuxedo?

Rules are meant to be bent.

Bond wore a Sub with his tux.

Show them who's Alpha.

Do it.

I think the Submariner works with a Tux and I have worn one many times with mine. I understand the Rules but this one is not applicable. Next time you go to an event take a look around. If the watch is the biggest infraction of the rules at the event then I don't know where you are.

If you do not like formal dress, then fair enough. However please have the decency not to foist yourself onto other people who attend the events correctly dressed.

I have a beautiful black leather alligator strap on hand for times I need to 'dress up' my gmtC. Does wonders.

Just remember, watch strap, belt and shoe finish should closely match if you want to get all proper.

For me it all depends on truly how formal an occasion it is.

If I were meeting Royals then i'd probably go 'dress watch' but let's face it that isn't really going to happen. 999/1000 black tie do's aren't 'that' formal these day's anyway so in answer to your question.... YES! Go and pretend to be 007 for the night and have fun

Don't forget to take some pics

I think a Sub looks sharp with a tuxedo. If you have a watch with PCLs it might be a little more appropriate, since PCLs "dress-up" watches IMHO
