Need Help. Patek Philippe 5196 vs 5296.

I'm planning to buy my first dress watch, and I want a Patek Philippe, white gold, but I'm between the 5196 and the 5296, manual wind vs automatic wind. I'm thinking about the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony too. Any advice and please with details, remember that is my very first dress watch. Thanks.

Both are classic dress watches. The 5296 also has a display caseback, whereas the 5196 has a solid caseback. The 5196 has a more tradtional dial and the 5296 a modern modern dial. You can't go wrong with either.

Not on your list, but the 5196p is worth consideration.

(Please pardon the lousy AD lit picture).

Hate to say it here but the patrimony small seconds would be getting my money amongst those. Shown here in platinum.

100% agree!

5296 would be my second choice. 5196 does nothing for me, especially compared to the VC pictured above. Not to stray off topic, but this illustrates why PP desperately needs an appropriate sized movement for their manual wind calatrava. Now that's a reference I'd be interested in.

Now that I'm staring the patrimony down a bit it could use a longer hour hand but I digress...

My Nothing classier for dress in white PM than the 5196P. The solid case back covers up the negative of the small movement.

There's still the position of the subdial to account for...

I'm thinking a lot about the VC Patrimony, seems a very good option to me, Vacheron has something special, I can't tell what it is but it do really exist.

The Lange 1815 is worth consideration also!

I had debated between the Calatrava, Patrimony and ALS Saxonia but ended up going with the Patrimony. Mine is the 40 mm, manual wind, white gold two-hander. Very simple, understated but elegant dress watch.

I'm working towards getting the same watch. So far I've tried on the 5196, 5296, Patrimony, ALS 1815 and Saxonia.

Of the two ALS the 1815 was the favourite. The finishing on the movement is fantastic, it had a great weight, comfortable. The Saxonia was great too but I preferred the 1815.

The Patrimony was lovely but didn't seem to feel particularly special. I had high hopes for this one and was quite disappointed that it didn't work for me.

Then I tried the PP. 5296 first as that was all the AD had in stock. Absolutely fantastic but I'm not into dates. Gave me a good idea though. Was then able to try on a 5196 while on holiday. It's basically perfect. Fit beautifully but also had great "presence". Love that the 215PS movement has been around forever. Can't see the movement, the ALS is ahead in that regard, but everything else weighs heavily in the PPs favour. Re the 5196P, yes it's absolutely lovely but it's also much more expensive, too far out of my league.

Well those are my thoughts, definitely going to be the 5196. Just have to get saving now and not buy the Sub ND I've been looking at too!

I'm gonna raise the bet:
FP Journe CS > Breguet 7147 Enamel > VC Patrimony SS Platinum > ALS 1815 > Patek 5296P

But the differences among them are too small and subjective.

Vacheron 82172/000G. It also has the Geneva Seal on the case and movement.........there is still a sense of romanticism in having that on a watch IMO.

Patek needs a larger movement and a clear caseback on the 5196 to compete in modern time. Also, I solely wear brown footwear so I like brown straps on my dress watches. The greyish dial on the 5196 doesn't mesh as nicely on brown leather as the VC dial does.

I agree the subdial is a little high due to the small 215 movement. But in the 5196P it works for me because you get room for the full Breguet Arabic 6 at the bottom of the dial.

I've tried on the 5196,5227,5296,saxonia ,and Patrimony about 5-10 times in the last 2 years.

Finally bought the 5196G. It's clean and stunning.

Try on the options and consider automatic Vs Manual. I'm Very happy with my buy

Even though the 215 PS movement is very undersized for the case, 5196 would be the one for me. Everything else about it is just perfect and timeless.

It's very difficult to choose between Vacheron and Patek, both have history, legacy and prestige.

5196 is a great piece. No frills, but oozes elegance. I chose r, but that was just my taste for that specific piece.

Sorry, but a red/blue bezel along with large circular 'diver' hour indices is anything but a dress watch. To each his own, but that looks absolutely awful with a suit IMO.

As far as looking awful , to each their own ...
And the GMT is not a diver to clarify .
It's a pilots watch and I do recall pilots do wear
suits ? Yeah ? So... I personally would get that..

...ok?

1. As far as looking awful with a suit, I already stated 'IMO'.

2. I never said the GMT is a diver. I said it had 'diver' hour indices.....because it does. Why don't you take a look at the Rolex Sub or an Omega Seamaster 300. This is traditionally a design found on divers.

3. I see plenty of guys wearing suits that fit like sacks paired with abominations for shoes. Does that mean I find it acceptable for myself to wear? No...

4. Personally you can get whatever your heart desires. If you want to spend $30k on a white gold Rolex, go for it!

Sorry, but just because it's in white gold doesn't make it a dress piece. Furthermore, the fit and finishing won't touch the above pieces from Patek or VC (do you see the VC movement?).

I like your suggestion but don't think the BLRO would go well with many suit options and the OP specified "dress watch." In my experience the BLRO really tops out at a business casual pairing.

What about the 5524?
