Back to the question, betweem the two, I tend to prefer 5711 slightly. Only reason is that I am not that keen on the 3/4 plate for the Lange 1, but the Datograph..... GORGEOUS!

Patek for me but the ALS is a great watch as well
The history of Patek can not be matched by any brand IMHO and the nautilus is one of the icons of the entire Patek line

Thanks for the opinions guys!
Not sure if you saw my post above but in addition to the two I am now considering a 5146 as well.. A trio of equally great options... Dickson, yes I can handle the Roo cos it's on soft leather ie the F1 strap. The jumbos bracelet is far too stiff producing gaps at the lugs. |

Adding the 5146 to mix changes things.
1. 5146 2. Lange 1 3. 5711 and good luck!

Can someone comment if ALS holds value in the resale market? I always have the impression that only Rolex and Pateks hold value well.

Tough call... I love both but would give a slight edge to Lange for being gold.

Unfortunately Lange resale is not what it should be given the value of the watch. IMO it's critical to buy the Lange at the right discounted price. Then resale isn't an issue but it's not PP or Rolex.

I personally prefer the Lange 1 to the Nautilus, it may not hae te same history or legacy abd may not have such a good resale value but I know it fits my style more, a beautiful dressy yet versatile watch with a special looking dial and a stunning movement (although Patek is quite good on that side as well but I prefer the lange 1's).
Lange has my vote!

Thanks all again!
Mike, what in your opinion would be a suitable discount to look for in buying Lange brand new? Haven't seen many used Langes for sale around here so I'm not exactly sure how much to bargain for with my AD.. |

I would go for 5711. But I'm a sucker for Genta designs.

Just go to your AD and ask for a ALS catalogue. Then rest on your favorite couch and read it. Your choice will reveal itself naturally.

My personal choice would be 5711 but you do have a really small wrist, even the 5146 looks big on you....
You may need to try on the 5711 to see how it fits. |

To answer your earlier question, you should be able to get the Lange 1 for about USD23k new, and USD17k used I would imagine. Ordinarily I would say PP every time, but in the case of these two, I would go Lange.
Having said that, having just now seen your wristshot of the 5146, I think you need a smaller watch or a design which wraps the wrist better ie with more curvature. |

I agree. You may be better off looking at a smaller piece that will fit your wrist more comfortably. The ultimate person to please is you, however, and your the only one who can determine comfort.

Love the Patek, but in this case I would definitely go for the Lange 1!

Patek for me, the Lange 1 proportions are better on the Grand Lange 1.

Have decided to go for the Lange 1 moonphase in Rosegold.. it certainly is splendid on the wrist and the wife agrees! Have put up 2 Pams for sale and hopefully will be able to make a move in a month or so... |

You did two right choices in a row. Getting the 1 and getting rid of the PAMs.
