Road bike advice.

So as per an earlier post - my wife just finished her first ever marathon this weekend with her running group. Amazing time for her first at 3:24.
She wants to cross train over the winter and moving forward so we picked her up a lovely Devinci carbon gravel bike. She’ll slap in on a trainer for the winter and hit the roads in the spring.
However it’s started to motivate me to get back into it. Full disclosure .....last time I competitively rode- Greg Lemond was winning his tours.
Any advice on where to start? Don’t wanna drop another 5k on a second bike so will probably hit the used market over the winter.

Where are you located?

What kind of riding/ what sort of bike? I know you say road, but are you also considering something like a gravel bike that’ll fit larger tires or really want road-only?

About what size, if you recall...

Best place to start is going to be the local shop, even if just to get an idea of how far your money will go and to figure out priorities (disc brake, rim brake, carbon, aluminum, aggressive or relaxed geometry). And to see what inventory is like, as covid hammered bike shops and supply chains. A lot of our inventory has come from buying out shops that are closing.

Yah. Have realized what this pandemic has done for individual activities like biking.
Only reason we got her Devinci is that someone backed out of a deal.
Thinking gravel just for the flexibility.
I’m 5’10” so thinking 54-56 cm.
More bang for your buck on the used market.
I’m about an hour outside Toronto so market is pretty good for used.
Absolutely nothing in new.

How’s cross season looking up there? Ours isn’t looking so good. So you might be able to pick up someone’s pit bike relatively easily. Likely looking at disc brakes and carbon. Avoid mechanical disc. Factor in cost for new pads and rotors ($150). Avoid disc wheels with quick release skewers...look for 12mm axles front and rear. There’s lots of proprietary axles around, so don’t let that scare you. Some are better than others. They all work. If you can find some place to ride some around, I’d recommend it. You’re kind of in that sweet spot that could go 54 or 56 depending on body dimensions.

I am a mid 50's cyclist and my back cannot take an aggressive riding posture like it could in my 30's, so I ride a Cannondale Synapse carbon Ultegra (non disc brakes). It has a bit more of an upright riding style, but still is an amazing value amongst road bikes. I had custom HED Belgium wheels added, but you would not need them if you are just getting back into the groove. My rig on my 4Runner...

IMG_1579.jpeg

Felt, Giant, Specialized etc all have these mid entry level carbon road bikes. I think it is worth the extra cost to go from alloy to carbon. I would think you could land one for $2000 usd.

Good luck on your hunt. Cycling is my favorite form of exercise and keeps me young... er!

Oh, I am 5' 9" 170lbs and I ride a 56.

Size does matter. Above all, find a bike that fits. Selection is slim out there, but don’t buy the wrong size bike just because the deal is right, or it’s got the components you like, or it’s the right color. It sounds like you’re on the right track though, 56 is probably most common for a person your height. However, in my opinion, I think the effective top tube measurement is more important than frame size. Ride some different bikes, you’ll figure out what’s right. Good luck.

Yeah, I agree with this 100%. I'd also consider going and having a bike fit from someone not looking to sell you a bike. The guys in the LBS will try to fit you to a bike in their shop. An independent bike fit specialist will give you a selection of bikes that are best fit to you regardless of the brand.

I'm 51 and moved from carbon to titanium a couple of years ago. I don't ride nearly as much as I used to, but I love the feel of titanium!

Mid 60's old cyclist here that prefers carbon and a aggressive bent position. Yes the most common sense thing would be correct size and a proper fit. There are plenty of brand new bikes forsale no matter what the experts may tell you. Yes true the low bottom end is hard to find but the high end stuff is ample supply... Here is one of my weapons of choice iwith a set of deep dished RZR96's..

another thing to consider is that the road season was pretty much a waste. it's about time for smaller teams to be finalizing 2021 sponsorships, and unloading road bikes with little to no races on them. For example - I'm currently sitting on 13 team bikes with 1 race, waiting for some parts swaps so I can get them listed.

Check out bikes billed as “endurance Road”, “adventure” or “gravel” bikes. They offer a more upright body position that most of us over 50 vastly prefer as well as wider tires which makes for a more comfortable ride over rougher roads.

One of reasons it’s unfortunate to be in Canada and having to deal with all the import taxes etc. Really appreciate the offer.

Yes very true as almost impossible to get things across the border with everything going on. I am sure there are plenty of used bikes to choose from that will fit your needs...

Argon 18 has some bikes available. They sent this one out to my 8 year-old about a month ago. Shipped directly from the manufacturer in Canada. He and I did a quick 44 miler to the beach this morning.

Not sure if they sell into Canada, but check Canyon. German brand that sell online and amazing value bikes. Online bike fit will take some faith, but I’ve bought more than once and different geometries, no issues. Lots of others I know have done the same with no problems. They also run offers every 3 months.

Man. This pandemic pricing model is hard to swallow.
Been looking pretty hard for a while and the price I’d used bikes is through the the roof
New bikes sold out until spring. No negotiations happening anywhere which goes against everything I believe when it comes to large purchases.
Search continues.....

Road bike advice.

I don’t think this is quite what you’re asking for but I’ve been very happy with my fat bike. I have two road bikes and a mountain bike but after a couple close calls with distracted drivers I’ve been a little hesitant to hit the road. So I picked up a Trek Farley 7. With a fat bike and it’s massive tires, there is a lot of rolling resistance. I find that I can get a good workout in a fraction of the distance. Plus I can ride on almost anything including snow in the winter. So where I live my time on roads to get to trails is very minimal.

Lots of used options. Just make sure to include the extras such as shoes, pedals, helmet etc. It all adds up.

Here’s mine, got it several years back when I did the MS 150 then had it fitted for me and well worth the extra expanse to have that service performed

So found my new whip.
Bike shop owner gave this to his father in law (who’s 70) and he never rode it.
No miles. S5 full Ultegra build plus power meter and electronic shift.
Bonus is brand spanking new Giant SLR carbon wheels.
Now to slap in on a trainer and smash all the mirrors in my house before I try to squeeze into my cycling pants!!!

SO fresh and clean! Bike parts have been hard to locate this summer due to the covid and the extra demand.
