Don't they provide the participants with a movement? If not: Seiko 5.
I wouldn't buy one that is too expensive.

I guess the ideal would be a cheap second-hand watch (Citizen? Seiko? Lorus?) in reasonable working condition??? Could you get such a thing from a Second-hand store of some sort? I suppose Pawn stores tend to focus on higher-value brands?
Just thinking out loud.

Need a watch or can just buy a movement off eBay? I've heard of classes that start with the 6497 as an easy movement to start with. Maybe can buy a Chinese movement to play with?

(can't believe i'm saying this...) any cheap(est) invicta automatic and a cheap manual wind will work. cheap = lowest price.

go to a pawn broker in NYC or a department store.

I really hope they provide you with a 6497. It's an easy movement and it was the first I got to work on. The Seiko might be cheap but it's not an easy movement for someone with zero watchmaking skills. I had a hard time the first few times with that seiko movement. But it being the only proper affordable mechanical movement, your options are rather limited.

The class was amazing fun! Now I really find a cheap watch to destroy aka disassemble and reassemble...
