Yes and I do understand why those of us youngish collectors are drawn to the patek sport pieces-they are wearable with a relatively accessible price point. But as we’ve said they are NOT the fabric of Pateks DNA. It’s an interesting era for Patek to thread this needle but without diluting the brand reputation for complication, they will need to find a way to convert the owners of patek sport models into complications down the road. Idk how many will do so esp when retail prices are so high these days

I think this last year has shown the real power of social media and how online hype can really eat itself up into a frenzy that I'm sure has even drawn in many VIPs who thought they were well done with the simple sports but couldn't resist the hype and scarcity. This Basel will be interesting to see if TS still wants to keep the sports line as a smallish part of PP or if he accepts demographics and more casual desires are changing.

Totally on same page as you AK and Jorge. Its a unique time for Patek considering trends vs. tradition as this also reflects the difference between commercial buyers vs. collectors. In the midst of this market I've been trying to square the circle and understand how it can make sense (if it does at all.) What is the long term collectibility/value of a watch like the 5711/1A? It is a SERIALLY PRODUCED RE-EDITION of the original 3700 which is now in its 12TH YEAR. Patek keeps production number '"low" but we have no idea what that actually means quantitatively esp when production may just be relatively low compared to demand. The dive watch lines are NOT consistent with Patek's tradition but they may rather be the cash cows with high 2nd hand value. In addition, Patek has aggressively jacked up prices on (grand) complications so many many of the pieces trade for a discount to retail.

Funny you should say this, I’m a relatively young collector (late 20’s) and I actually started in Patek outside of sports watches - 5396G, then 5227G, dabbled with some world times then got into the big stuff with 3970P, 3971G, 5970 and wound up back to the sports watches. I find them easier to wear, set, go with regular clothes pretty well. And I will even wear Patek sports models with a suit! I love them. I will say it’s funny because I remember the times of drooling over the 5131’s and the hype was real... now 5711/1A hype is too real. So bizarre. But trends come and go... I did own a deep sea afteral hahaha. I will say, I love what Patek has done and think with all of Theirry and Sandrine’s faults aside they’re going strong. Some questionable designs but they still sell like crazy. I just love the Patek experience. AP was called the young man’s Patek when I first got into collecting. And I had my fair share of offshores and royal Oaks but something so nice about Patek... even if I’ve had my 5980 break and my date stick on more than one 324 I still come back.

Preach!! Amen to that.

I still wish Patek did a real tribute to the jumbo. Like AP did with the 15202 (even if the 15202 is a bit thicker than a 5402 A series) Patek should do an ultra thin movement based on the jlc and do away with the dang sweeping seconds. Heck at this pint they should just buy the movement from AP and do a different rotar. Put a nice window around the date like the rose gold, white dial, and platinum versions and make it a true throwback... so angry with what we got for the anniversary. To me the 5711 goes head to head with the 15300 or 15400 not the 15202.

Thanks for the kind words. You have plenty of sun and bucolic settings in Singapore to take some pics of yours as well!

This looks fantastic. White dials are so versatile. They look good when paired with almost any strap color.
