Looking for advice on the best way to buy used

I've been lurking around this forum for years lusting over the various watches in Rolex's line. After many years, I've finally settled in on the one watch I want, the 39mm Explorer I.

Specifically, I want the current version that was updated in 2016. Looking at Rolex's site, the current MSRP is $6,550. I know there is room to negotiate with AD's. I understand your mileage may vary here depending on the AD and the model in question (for example, no one is giving any discounts on Subs). That said, I've seen many example of discounts in the 10-12% range. I don't think the Explorer I is a hot watch, so I don't think it would be outside the realm of possibility to get a 10% discount from an AD, which would put the cost at $5,895.

I've got two questions specific to trying to purchase this watch used:

1) I know there are many trusted sellers here on this forum. That said, I don't typically see many used Explorer I's posted, especially those that are the newest version. Can you proactively engage these sellers noting what you want? Just not sure how this would work. Also, is there another approach I should consider for buying used besides trusted sellers on this forum?

2) How much should I reasonably expect to pay for a used (2016 model) Explorer I? As I illustrated above, I arrived a starting point of $5,895 for the watch brand new from an AD (let me know if I'm way off here). I know Rolex watches are famous for holding their value, so this is where I need help. How much additional money do you think I could save buying used on a watch that's only been out for 2 years or so? Would the additional discounting for used be substantial enough to warrant even buying used? For example, if I would only save an additional $500 buying used, I'm not sure it would make any sense to buy used.

In summary, I'm hoping to find a used Explorer I (updated model) in very good condition with box and papers still under warranty in the $4,500-$4,800 range. Is that reasonable to expect, or am I dreaming?

I like to use watchrecon.com as a gauge for pricing. Up to you to do due diligence for the seller. Might be able to find a Mk 1 dial in that range but the Mk 2 will prob be more since its relatively new. Great choice I have the same and enjoy it very much

1) Yes & place a WTB ad

2) Depends on current market markets, 39mm EXP seem to be in demand.

I just checked out the site, very helpful, thanks!

You are right about then MK2’s being more. Hoping I can find what I’m looking for with enough of a discount to even make it worth it buying used.

Couple of thoughts.

First, you're better off waiting until the TS has it and then negotiating for it. If he has to get it for you, then odds are, he has to pay more for it. And so will you.

Second, you've just picked a random number out of the air. Go to a few AD's and ask what their number is. Better yet, do your homework on watchrecon and get a number in your head before you visit the AD.

If you can get 10% off and no tax from an AD on a new Explorer, then just do that.

You're not going to save THAT much money going used, as the Rolex reseller market is crazy hot right now with almost all sports watches.

Don’t think you would get any discount at an AD right now. Maybe if you hve a relationship....maybe.

Most tursted seller are around 5300-5400 over the past year.

Don’t think you will find one for the price you suggest.

I wasn’t trying to imply that I would have the AD cover tax, I just left taxes out as I wanted to concentrate on price only as to not muddy the waters.

Are the figures you noted used or new? I ask because for some models,it appears they sell BNIB models for less than MSRP.

You’re expectations a little unrealistic for that budget. That being said DavidSW has a g serial right now for $4875 with box, tag, and card.

All sports SS Rolex models seem to be harder to come by at the moment. Not sure what kind of discount you could get at an AD especially as a new customer. I’d look at the trusted sellers here and buy preowned in excellent condition. I’ve only purchased one Rolex from an AD and many times from the TS on this forum. TS is the way to go unless you need your name on the original card.

I would definitely go with one of the trusted sellers here on TRF. I have done business with a couple of them and have never been disappointed in the product I received or the price I paid.

I'd contact sellers here and wait rather than put up a WTB, you'll get tons of scammers.

Pre-owned from a trusted seller. Can’t go wrong.

DavidSw has them available often, but they aren’t too far below them an AD price, but you’ll save a few hundred $$.

I’ve definitely seen them from legit sellers (using watchrecon)in the mid to high $5000 range with of course box and papers and a recent warranty card. I’ve never seen the newer Explorer 1 in the price range you are looking for though, and I’ve been following prices for 6+ months, so I think that getting one kinder $5,000 isn’t going to happen any time soon.

Find a trusted seller with a great track record and lots of feedback. Also don't bother doing a WTB ad unless you want to open yourself up to every scammer in the world. It is the best way to lose your hard earned money and the top way 99% of people get scammed here.

The fundamental problem is the Exp I MkII is a keeper watch not a flipper watch. So you don't see many available and not at the price point you are looking for. I bought mine from an AD and avoided taxes by having them ship it out of state to my Sister. I got a good deal. A TS might be able to save you some money over ad AD but if I can't save more than $500 I'd buy from the AD. If you go with cash to the AD you will be in the best position to buy.

Takuya is one of the better known TS and lives here in the Katy area. I've bought two watches from him face to face. If you bring cash you will get the best price. Contact him and ask him how much he can get the watch for you if you paid cash and bought face to face. You will get a quick answer. Then drive on down and get the watch. If he doesn't have one it will take a day or two to get it. He is a stand up guy.

I don't have much experience with chrono24, but it seems to have great variety of sellers and watches all over the place.

Bingo. Find out who you can trust (and there are PLENTY on here) and then pick the watch you want. Almost certainly one or more will have the watch you seek.
